Safety

The Portofino offers optional crash mitigation brakes, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Corvette doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The Portofino’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Corvette doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Portofino offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Corvette only offers a rear monitor and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the front or sides.

Both the Portofino and the Corvette have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rear parking sensors, available blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Portofino comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Corvette’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

The Portofino’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Corvette’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Ferrari pays for scheduled maintenance on the Portofino for 7 years and unlimited miles. Ferrari will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Corvette.

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Portofino has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Corvette.

Engine

The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 122 more horsepower (612 vs. 490) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 465) than the Corvette’s standard 6.2 V8. The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 117 more horsepower (612 vs. 495) and 91 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 470) than the Corvette Z51’s standard 6.2 V8. The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 101 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 460) than the Corvette Z06’s standard 5.5 DOHC V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Portofino gets better mileage than the Corvette:

MPG

Portofino

3.9 turbo V8

16 city/23 hwy

Corvette

5.5 DOHC V8

12 city/21 hwy

Carbon Aero 5.5 DOHC V8

12 city/19 hwy

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Portofino’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Corvette doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Portofino has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Corvette (21.1 vs. 18.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Portofino’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Corvette:

Portofino

Corvette

Front Rotors

15.4 inches

12.6 inches

Rear Rotors

14.2 inches

13.3 inches

The Portofino’s brakes have 30% more swept area (the area covered by the brake pads) than the Corvette (835 vs. 640 square inches), so the Portofino has more braking power available.

Tires and Wheels

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Portofino has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch front wheels are standard on the Corvette.

Suspension and Handling

The Portofino’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (46% to 54%) than the Corvette’s (40% to 60%). This gives the Portofino more stable handling and braking.

Passenger Space

The Portofino has standard seating for 4 passengers; the Corvette can only carry 2.

The Portofino has 24 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Corvette (75 vs. 51).

Ergonomics

The Portofino’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Chevrolet does not offer a locking feature on the Corvette’s standard power windows.

The Portofino’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Corvette’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Portofino’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Corvette’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Portofino detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Corvette doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Portofino offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Corvette doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Portofino offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Corvette doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
