2023 Ferrari Portofino
2023 BMW 8 Series

Safety

The Portofino offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 8 Series only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Portofino and the 8 Series have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Portofino comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The 8 Series’ 50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

Ferrari pays for scheduled maintenance on the Portofino for 4 years and -36,000 miles longer than BMW pays for maintenance for the 8 Series (7/unlimited vs. 3/36,000).

Engine

The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 277 more horsepower (612 vs. 335) and 193 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 368) than the 840i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 89 more horsepower (612 vs. 523) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 553) than the M850i’s standard 4.4 turbo V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Portofino has 3.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the 8 Series (21.1 vs. 18 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Portofino has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The 8 Series doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Ferrari Portofino higher (6 out of 10) than the BMW 8 Series (3). This means the Portofino produces up to 23.4 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the 8 Series every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The Portofino offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The 8 Series doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Portofino’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the 8 Series:

Portofino

8 Series

Front Rotors

15.4 inches

13.7 inches

Rear Rotors

14.2 inches

13.6 inches

The Portofino has standard heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The 8 Series doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the Portofino has larger rear tires than the 8 Series (285/35R20 vs. 275/30R20).

The Portofino’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 8 Series’ standard 40 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Portofino has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the 8 Series.

Chassis

The Ferrari Portofino may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 1000 pounds less than the BMW 8 Series.

The Portofino is 10.3 inches shorter than the 8 Series, making the Portofino easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Ferrari Portofino amounts to more than styling. The Portofino has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .312 Cd. That is lower than the 8 Series (.31 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Portofino get better fuel mileage.

The Portofino’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The 8 Series doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

Ergonomics

The Portofino’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. BMW does not offer a locking feature on the 8 Series’ standard power windows.
