Safety

The Portofino offers optional crash mitigation brakes, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The DB11 doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The Portofino’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The DB11 doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Portofino’s optional rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The DB11 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

The Portofino has standard GPS Response System, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The DB11 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Portofino and the DB11 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, front and rear parking sensors, available blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

Warranty

Ferrari pays for scheduled maintenance on the Portofino for 7 years and unlimited miles. Ferrari will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Aston Martin doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the DB11.

Engine

The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 84 more horsepower (612 vs. 528) and 48 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 513) than the DB11 V8’s standard 4.0 turbo V8. The Portofino’s 3.9 turbo V8 produces 45 lbs.-ft. more torque (561 vs. 516) than the DB11 V12’s standard 5.2 turbo V12.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Portofino has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The DB11 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Ferrari Portofino higher (6 out of 10) than the Aston Martin DB11 (3 to 5). This means the Portofino produces up to 23.4 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the DB11 every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The Portofino offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The DB11 doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

Brakes and Stopping

The Portofino has standard heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The DB11 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

The Portofino’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the DB11’s standard 40 series front tires.

Chassis

The Ferrari Portofino may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 450 pounds less than the Aston Martin DB11.

The Portofino is 6.1 inches shorter than the DB11, making the Portofino easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Portofino’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The DB11 doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

Passenger Space

The Portofino has 3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the DB11 (75 vs. 72).

Cargo Capacity

The Portofino has a larger trunk with its top up than the DB11 Volante with its top up (10.3 vs. 9.9 cubic feet).

The Portofino’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The DB11 doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Portofino. The DB11 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics

The Portofino’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Aston Martin does not offer a locking feature on the DB11’s standard power windows.

The Portofino’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The DB11’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the Portofino detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The DB11 doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The Portofino’s sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The DB11’s visors are fixed into the windshield header.

The Portofino’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The DB11 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Portofino offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The DB11 doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
