Safety

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Hornet offers optional Rear Park-Assist with Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Tonale doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the Hornet and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Hornet 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 17 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Hornet’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 68 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is ranked 27th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge above average in long-term dependability. With 26 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Alfa Romeo is rated below average.

Engine

The Hornet R/T’s standard 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 3 more horsepower (288 vs. 285) and 33 lbs.-ft. more torque (383 vs. 350) than the Tonale’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Hornet has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Tonale doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

For more complete vehicle control the Hornet has a manually controlled automatic, with the available convenience of an automatic transmission and the complete gear control of a manual transmission without the inconvenience of a clutch. A manually controlled automatic allows the driver to eliminate unwanted shifts and maximize engine braking by down shifting while cornering. The Tonale doesn’t offer a transmission that allows complete gear control.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Dodge Hornet, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Tonale.

Ergonomics

The Hornet offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Tonale doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Hornet’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Tonale’s

The Hornet’s available GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that plots alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The Tonale’s available navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

The Hornet’s optional ParkSense Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Tonale doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
