The Cherokee has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The XT4 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Cherokee. But it costs extra on the XT4.

The Cherokee’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the XT4.

Both the Cherokee and the XT4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Cherokee is safer than the Cadillac XT4:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Cherokee is safer than the Cadillac XT4:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, its “Good” rating in the new passenger-side small overlap crash test, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Cherokee the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2019, a rating granted to only 195 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The XT4 has not been fully tested, yet.

Warranty

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Cherokee for 3 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance (up to 3 oil changes). Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the XT4.

There are over 4 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Cadillac dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Cherokee’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Cherokee’s reliability 23 points higher than the XT4.

Engine

The Cherokee Trailhawk’s optional 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 35 more horsepower (270 vs. 235) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the XT4’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Cherokee Trailhawk 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the Cadillac XT4:

Tires and Wheels

The Cherokee Trailhawk has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the XT4; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling

The Cherokee’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The XT4 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Cherokee Altitude LUX executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the XT4 Sport AWD (27.1 seconds @ .62 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Cherokee has a 1.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the XT4 (7.9 vs. 6.7 inches), allowing the Cherokee to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Cherokee Trailhawk’s minimum ground clearance is 2 inches higher than on the XT4 (8.7 vs. 6.7 inches).

Passenger Space

The Cherokee has 2.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XT4 (103.5 vs. 101.3).

The Cherokee has .6 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, .8 inches more rear legroom and .1 inches more rear hip room than the XT4.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Cherokee’s rear seats recline. The XT4’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the XT4 with its rear seat up (27.6 vs. 22.5 cubic feet). The Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the XT4 with its rear seat folded (54.7 vs. 48.9 cubic feet).

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Cadillac XT4 is limited to 3500 pounds. The Cherokee offers up to a 4000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Cherokee 4x4 with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Cherokee can be unhitched and driven around locally. The XT4 can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Ergonomics

The Cherokee’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The XT4’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

The Cherokee’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The XT4 Luxury’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

The Cherokee has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the XT4.

The Cherokee has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XT4 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Cherokee is less expensive to operate than the XT4 because it costs $828 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Cherokee than the XT4, including $101 less for a water pump, $44 less for a muffler, $250 less for fuel injection, $88 less for a timing belt/chain and $442 less for a power steering pump.

The Jeep Cherokee outsold the Cadillac XT4 by 85% during 2022.
