The Cayenne has a standard Multi-collision Brake System, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Cayenne helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The Cayenne offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Cayenne and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Cayenne’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s (12 vs. 5 years).

There are over 40 percent more Porsche dealers than there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Cayenne’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. With 11 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Porsche higher than Alfa Romeo.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are more reliable than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche above average in long-term dependability. With 30 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Alfa Romeo is rated below average.

Engine

The Cayenne GTS’ standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 14 lbs.-ft. more torque (457 vs. 443) than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s 2.9 turbo V6. The Cayenne E-Hybrid’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid produces 73 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 443) than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s 2.9 turbo V6. The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 hybrid produces 165 more horsepower (670 vs. 505) and 220 lbs.-ft. more torque (663 vs. 443) than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s 2.9 turbo V6.

As tested in Motor Trend the Cayenne Turbo 4.0 turbo V8 is faster than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio:

In a Car and Driver race course test, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo was clocked 5.6 seconds faster than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio (179.2 sec. vs. 184.8 sec.).

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Cayenne running on electricity gets better mileage than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio:

On the EPA test cycle the Cayenne E-Hybrid running its gasoline engine gets better fuel mileage than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (20 city/22 hwy vs. 17 city/23 hwy).

The Cayenne can travel with zero emissions for 15 to 17 miles (dependent on model). The Stelvio Quadrifoglio can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Cayenne’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid’s standard fuel tank has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (19.8 vs. 16.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Cayenne’s standard fuel tank has 6.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (23.7 vs. 16.9 gallons).

Transmission

The Cayenne’s optional launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Cayenne CCB’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio:

The Cayenne offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The Cayenne Turbo has standard air brakes, which adjust the spoiler automatically during high-speed braking in order to shorten stopping distances. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer air brakes.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Cayenne’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (F:285/40R21 & R:315/35R21 vs. F:255/45R20 & R:285/40R20).

The Cayenne’s optional 285/35R22 front and 315/30R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Cayenne offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The Cayenne has a standard space-saver spare (not available on E-Hybrid) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Cayenne offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Cayenne offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Alfa Romeo doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The Cayenne has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Cayenne’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Cayenne’s wheelbase is 3.1 inches longer than on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (114 inches vs. 110.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Cayenne is 5.1 inches wider in the front and 2.5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The Cayenne handles at .96 G’s, while the Stelvio Quadrifoglio pulls only .95 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Cayenne Turbo executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (23.9 seconds @ .83 average G’s vs. 24.9 seconds @ .79 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Cayenne w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 4.6 feet tighter than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s (35.1 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Cayenne has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (8.2 vs. 7.9 inches), allowing the Cayenne to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Cayenne Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 1.7 inches higher than on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (9.6 vs. 7.9 inches).

Chassis

The front grille of the Cayenne uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Cayenne is quieter than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio:

Passenger Space

The Cayenne has 4.5 inches more front legroom, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, 8.4 inches more rear legroom and .5 inches more rear shoulder room than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Cayenne’s rear seats recline. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s rear seats don’t recline.

The front step up height for the Cayenne is .3 inches lower than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio (16.75” vs. 17”). The Cayenne’s rear step up height is 2 inches lower than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s (16” vs. 18”).

Cargo Capacity

The Cayenne has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio with its rear seat up (27.2 vs. 18.5 cubic feet). The Cayenne has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio with its rear seat folded (60.3 vs. 56.5 cubic feet).

The Cayenne’s cargo area is larger than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s in almost every dimension:

Towing

The Cayenne has a 7700 lbs. towing capacity. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio has no towing capacity.

Standard trailer sway control on the Cayenne uses the Porsche Stability Management sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Porsche service is better than Alfa Romeo. J.D. Power ranks Porsche third in service department satisfaction. With a 78% lower rating, Alfa Romeo is ranked 32nd.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, the Cayenne offers an optional driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle and climate settings and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Cayenne’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

The Cayenne offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Cayenne’s LED headlights produce a white, bright light using less electricity than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s xenon high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. HID headlights can be slow to reach full brightness or power cycle, causing issues when flashing them to signal other vehicles; LED headlights light instantly. LED lights also last about three to four times as long.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Cayenne has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Cayenne to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Cayenne with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Cayenne’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Cayenne offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The Cayenne’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Park Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Porsche Cayenne, based on reliability, safety and performance.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Cayenne third among upper midsize premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio isn’t in the top three.

The Porsche Cayenne outsold the Alfa Romeo Stelvio by 88% during 2022.
