Safety
Reliability
To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Ghibli has a standard 850-amp battery. The S90’s 800-amp battery isn’t as powerful.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Maserati vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 1 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Maserati higher than Volvo.

Fuel Economy and Range
Both the Ghibli and the S90 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Ghiblis have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The S90 T8 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.
The Ghibli has 5.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (21.1 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.
Transmission
The Ghibli Trofeo’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The S90 doesn’t offer launch control.
Brakes and Stopping
For better stopping power the Ghibli’s brake rotors are larger than those on the S90:

Tires and Wheels
For better traction and acceleration, the Ghibli has larger standard rear tires than the S90 (275/40R19 vs. 255/35R20). The Ghibli’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the S90 (285/35R20 vs. 255/35R20).
The Ghibli’s optional 285/30R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S90’s optional 35 series tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli offers optional 21-inch wheels. The S90’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.
Suspension and Handling
The front and rear suspension of the Ghibli uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.
The Ghibli’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The S90 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.
For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Ghibli is .7 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than on the S90.
The Ghibli Modena Q4 handles at .91 G’s, while the S90 pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.
The Ghibli Modena Q4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the S90 (25.5 seconds @ .8 average G’s vs. 26.3 seconds @ .68 average G’s).
Chassis
The Maserati Ghibli may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 350 pounds less than the Volvo S90.
The Ghibli is 4.2 inches shorter than the S90, making the Ghibli easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
Passenger Space
Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Ghibli a Large car, while the S90 is rated a Mid-size.
The Ghibli has 6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S90 (108 vs. 102).
The Ghibli has 1 inch more front headroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom and 1.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the S90.
Cargo Capacity
The Ghibli has a much larger trunk than the S90 (17.7 vs. 13.5 cubic feet).
The Ghibli’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The S90 Luxury Package doesn’t offer folding rear seats.
Servicing Ease
The engine in the Ghibli is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.
A maintenance reminder system is standard on the Ghibli to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Volvo doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the S90.
Ergonomics
The Ghibli’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.
The Ghibli’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The S90 does not have an oil pressure gauge.
Model Availability
The Ghibli is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
