The AMG GLS’ pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The DBX doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes AMG GLS are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Aston Martin DBX doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The AMG GLS’ standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The DBX doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The AMG GLS has a standard Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The DBX doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The AMG GLS’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The DBX doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The AMG GLS has standard Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The DBX doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the AMG GLS and the DBX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The Mercedes AMG GLS weighs 881 to 1079 pounds more than the Aston Martin DBX. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The AMG GLS comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The DBX’s 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

There are almost 11 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Aston Martin dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG GLS’ warranty.

Engine

The AMG GLS’ 4.0 turbo V8 hybrid produces 61 more horsepower (603 vs. 542) and 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 516) than the DBX’s standard 4.0 turbo V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Mercedes AMG GLS is faster than the Aston Martin DBX 4.0:

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the AMG GLS’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The DBX doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The AMG GLS has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the DBX (23.8 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes AMG GLS higher (6 out of 10) than the Aston Martin DBX (5). This means the AMG GLS produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the DBX every 15,000 miles.

Suspension and Handling

The AMG GLS’ drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The DBX doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the AMG GLS’ wheelbase is 2.9 inches longer than on the DBX (123.4 inches vs. 120.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the AMG GLS is .2 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than on the DBX.

For better maneuverability, the AMG GLS’ turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the DBX’s (39.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the AMG GLS has a greater minimum ground clearance than the DBX (9.8 vs. 9.3 inches), allowing the AMG GLS to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the AMG GLS has an electronically controlled liquid-filled main engine mount. A computer-controlled electric current in the liquid changes its viscosity, allowing the mount to dampen the engine completely at all RPMs. The DBX uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

Passenger Space

The AMG GLS has standard seating for 7 passengers; the DBX can only carry 5.

The AMG GLS has .9 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, 1 inch more rear legroom and 4 inches more rear shoulder room than the DBX.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the AMG GLS’ middle row seats recline. The DBX’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The AMG GLS’ cargo area provides more volume than the DBX.

The AMG GLS’ standard towing capacity is much higher than the DBX’s (7700 vs. 5940 pounds).

Servicing Ease

An ASSYST PLUS is standard on the AMG GLS to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes, tire rotation and brake pad replacement based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Aston Martin doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the DBX.

Ergonomics

The AMG GLS has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The DBX doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The AMG GLS offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The DBX doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the AMG GLS to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The DBX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the AMG GLS has a standard rear wiper. The DBX doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the AMG GLS has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The DBX doesn’t offer cornering lights. The AMG GLS also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the AMG GLS has standard extendable sun visors. The DBX doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the AMG GLS to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The DBX doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The AMG GLS has standard massaging front and optional massaging second row seats. Massaging seats aren’t available in the DBX.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes AMG GLS has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console and one for the rear passengers. Wireless charging costs extra on the DBX.

The AMG GLS has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The DBX doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The AMG GLS’ Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The DBX’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

Recommendations

The Mercedes GLS outsold the Aston Martin DBX by almost 29 to one during the 2022 model year.
