The Ford Mustang has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Veloster doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Mustang and the Veloster have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available rear parking sensors.

Warranty

There are almost 4 times as many Ford dealers as there are Hyundai dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Mustang’s warranty.

Reliability

The Mustang has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The Veloster doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the car’s engine.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford above average in initial quality. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is rated below average.

Engine

The Mustang’s standard 2.3 turbo 4-cylinder produces 35 more horsepower (310 vs. 275) and 90 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 260) than the Veloster’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Mustang’s optional 2.3 turbo 4-cylinder produces 55 more horsepower (330 vs. 275) and 90 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 260) than the Veloster’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Mustang GT’s standard 5.0 DOHC V8 produces 175 more horsepower (450 vs. 275) and 150 lbs.-ft. more torque (410 vs. 260) than the Veloster’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Mustang Mach 1’s standard 5.0 DOHC V8 produces 195 more horsepower (470 vs. 275) and 150 lbs.-ft. more torque (410 vs. 260) than the Veloster’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Ford Mustang is faster than the Hyundai Veloster (manual transmissions tested):

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Mustang Fastback 10-speed Auto with its standard engine gets better fuel mileage than the Veloster N 8-speed SMG (22 city/32 hwy vs. 20 city/27 hwy).

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Mustang uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The Veloster requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Mustang EcoBoost’s standard fuel tank has 2.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Veloster (15.5 vs. 13.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Mustang GT/Mach 1’s standard fuel tank has 2.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Veloster (16 vs. 13.2 gallons).

The Mustang has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Veloster doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is available on the Ford Mustang, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Veloster.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Mustang V8 PP/Mach 1’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Veloster:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Mustang Mach 1’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Veloster (F:305/30R19 & R:315/30R19 vs. 235/35R19).

The Mustang Mach 1’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Veloster’s 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Mustang offers optional 20-inch wheels. The Veloster’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The Mustang has a standard space-saver spare (not available on Handling Package/H.O. Package/Mach 1) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Veloster; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Mustang’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the Veloster (107.1 inches vs. 104.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Mustang is .9 inches wider in the front and 3.5 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Veloster.

The Mustang’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (54.6% to 45.4%) than the Veloster’s (63.8% to 36.2%). This gives the Mustang more stable handling and braking.

The Mustang GT Fastback handles at 1.13 G’s, while the Veloster N pulls only .97 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Mustang GT Fastback executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the Veloster N (23.6 seconds @ .86 average G’s vs. 25.2 seconds @ .75 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Mustang’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the Veloster N’s (36.5 feet vs. 38.1 feet).

Chassis

The front grille of the Mustang (except Performance Pack) uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Veloster doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Mustang Convertible uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Veloster doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Mustang Fastback has 2.5 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front hip room, .3 inches more front shoulder room and .9 inches more rear hip room than the Veloster.

Cargo Capacity

A standard locking glovebox and optional locking center console keeps your small valuables safer in the Mustang. The Veloster doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Mustang is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Veloster. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

When three different drivers share the Mustang Premium/Mach 1, the optional memory system makes it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, suspension setting, power steering assist and outside mirror angle. The Veloster doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Mustang Premium/Mach 1’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Veloster doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Mustang’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Veloster does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Mustang’s front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Veloster’s passenger windows don’t open or close automatically.

On a hot day the Mustang’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Veloster can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Mustang’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Veloster’s passenger power window and power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Mustang’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Veloster’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Mustang’s standard rear view mirror has an automatic dimming feature. This mirror can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on it, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Veloster doesn’t offer the luxury of an automatic dimming rear view mirror.

The Mustang Premium/Mach 1 Deluxe has standard heated front seats, which keep the driver and front passenger extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated seats aren’t available in the Veloster.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Mustang Premium/Mach 1 Deluxe keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Veloster doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Mustang Premium/Mach 1’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Veloster doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The Mustang’s optional dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The Veloster doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Mustang offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Veloster doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

Model Availability

The Ford Mustang comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Hyundai Veloster isn’t available as a convertible.

Economic Advantages

The Mustang will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Mustang will retain 47.24% to 58.69% of its original price after five years, while the Veloster only retains 44.95% to 45.9%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Mustang is less expensive to operate than the Veloster because it costs $282 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Mustang than the Veloster, including $37 less for a water pump, $173 less for a starter, $213 less for a fuel pump and $123 less for front struts.

Recommendations

The Mustang GT/Bullitt was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” in 2019. The Veloster has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Ford Mustang outsold the Hyundai Veloster by over four to one during the 2022 model year.
