Safety

The Ghost has standard PostCrash, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Ghost has standard Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Ghost’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Flying Spur.

The Ghost’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Ghost and the Flying Spur have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Ghost comes with a full 4-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Flying Spur’s 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

The Ghost’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Flying Spur’s (4 vs. 3 years).

Rolls-Royce pays for scheduled maintenance on the Ghost for 4 years and unlimited miles. Rolls-Royce will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Bentley doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Flying Spur.

Engine

The Ghost’s 6.6 turbo V12 produces 27 more horsepower (563 vs. 536) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 553) than the Hybrid Flying Spur’s standard 2.9 turbo V6 hybrid. The Ghost’s 6.6 turbo V12 produces 21 more horsepower (563 vs. 542) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 568) than the Flying Spur V8’s standard 4.0 turbo V8.

Brakes and Stopping

The Ghost stops shorter than the Flying Spur:

Motor Trend

Tires and Wheels

The Ghost’s 255/40R21 front and 285/35R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Flying Spur V8’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghost has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the Flying Spur V8.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the Ghost can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ghost’s wheelbase is 4 inches longer than on the Flying Spur (129.7 inches vs. 125.7 inches). The Ghost Extended’s wheelbase is 10.3 inches longer than on the Flying Spur (136 inches vs. 125.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Ghost is .1 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than on the Flying Spur.

Chassis

The Ghost uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Ghost has 1.7 inches more front headroom, 3.9 inches more rear headroom and 2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Flying Spur.

Cargo Capacity

The Ghost has a much larger trunk than the Flying Spur (17.9 vs. 14.8 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

If the windows are left open on the Ghost the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Flying Spur can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Ghost has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Ghost has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Flying Spur doesn’t offer cornering lights. The Ghost also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The Ghost has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Flying Spur.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Rolls-Royce Ghost has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console and one for the rear passengers. Wireless charging costs extra on the Flying Spur.

The Ghost’s Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Flying Spur’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
