For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The Kia Telluride doesn’t offer pretensioners for its second-row seat belts.

The Range Rover’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Telluride doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover. But it costs extra on the Telluride.

Both the Range Rover and the Telluride have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Land Rover Range Rover weighs 785 to 1806 pounds more than the Kia Telluride. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The Range Rover’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the Telluride’s (6/unlimited vs. 5/100,000).

Engine

The Range Rover P400’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 104 more horsepower (395 vs. 291) and 144 lbs.-ft. more torque (406 vs. 262) than the Telluride’s 3.8 DOHC V6. The Range Rover P440e’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 143 more horsepower (434 vs. 291) and 195 lbs.-ft. more torque (457 vs. 262) than the Telluride’s 3.8 DOHC V6. The Range Rover P530’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 produces 232 more horsepower (523 vs. 291) and 291 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 262) than the Telluride’s 3.8 DOHC V6.

As tested in Car and Driver the Range Rover P530 4.4 turbo V8 is faster than the Kia Telluride:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover P400 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder Hybrid 8-speed Auto running its gasoline engine gets better fuel mileage than the Telluride 4x4 (18 city/26 hwy vs. 18 city/24 hwy).

The Range Rover P440e can travel with zero emissions for 48 miles. The Telluride can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Telluride doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Range Rover’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Telluride doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Range Rover’s standard fuel tank has 5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Telluride (23.8 vs. 18.8 gallons).

Transmission

The Range Rover’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Telluride doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Telluride:

The Range Rover’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Telluride are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover has larger standard tires than the Telluride (275/50R21 vs. 245/60R18). The Range Rover’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Telluride (285/40R23 vs. 245/60R18).

The Range Rover’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Telluride LX/X-Pro’s standard 60 series tires. The Range Rover’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Telluride S/EX/SX’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Telluride LX/X-Pro. The Range Rover’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels on the Telluride S/EX/SX.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Telluride doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Telluride, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Telluride’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Range Rover’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Telluride doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover SWB’s wheelbase is 3.8 inches longer than on the Telluride (118 inches vs. 114.2 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover SWB’s turning circle is 2.9 feet tighter than the Telluride’s (35.9 feet vs. 38.8 feet). The Range Rover LWB’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the Telluride’s (37.9 feet vs. 38.8 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover has a 3.6 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Telluride (11.6 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Range Rover to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover’s minimum ground clearance is 3.2 inches higher than on the Telluride X-Line/X-Pro (11.6 vs. 8.4 inches).

Chassis

The Range Rover uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Telluride doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Range Rover SWB First Edition is quieter than the Telluride SX 4x4 (66 vs. 67 dB).

Passenger Space

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Range Rover when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the tailgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The Telluride doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover LWB’s cargo area provides more volume than the Telluride.

Both the Range Rover and the Telluride have standard second row automatic folding seats. The Range Rover’s third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a switch. The Telluride doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

The Range Rover’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Telluride’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Towing

The Range Rover’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Telluride’s (7716 vs. 5000 pounds).

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Range Rover is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Telluride. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Telluride SX, the Range Rover has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

If the windows are left open on the Range Rover the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Telluride can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Range Rover’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Telluride’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Range Rover to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Telluride doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The Range Rover’s LED headlights produce a whiter, brighter light (up to 3x) using five times less power than the Telluride’s standard projector halogen headlights and light instantly. LED lights also last over twenty times longer than halogen.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Telluride doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Telluride doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

The Range Rover’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Telluride offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Range Rover offers optional massaging front and second row seats, which keep the driver and middle row passengers. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Telluride.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Telluride S/EX/SX offers wireless charging.

The Range Rover’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Telluride doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
