Both the Range Rover and QX80 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The QX80’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover. But it costs extra on the QX80.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Range Rover’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The QX80 doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The Range Rover’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The QX80 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the Range Rover uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The QX80 uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the Range Rover and the QX80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Infiniti vehicles. With 11 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Land Rover higher than Infiniti.

Engine

The Range Rover P440e’s standard 3.0 turbo/supercharged 6-cylinder hybrid produces 34 more horsepower (434 vs. 400) and 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (457 vs. 413) than the QX80’s 5.6 DOHC V8. The Range Rover P530’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 produces 123 more horsepower (523 vs. 400) and 140 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 413) than the QX80’s 5.6 DOHC V8.

As tested in Car and Driver the Range Rover P530 4.4 turbo V8 is faster than the Infiniti QX80:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover running its gasoline engine gets better mileage than the QX80:

The Range Rover P440e can travel with zero emissions for 48 miles. The QX80 can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The QX80 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Range Rover’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The QX80 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

Transmission

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Range Rover, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the QX80.

The Range Rover’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The QX80 doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover’s brake rotors are larger than those on the QX80:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the QX80 (285/40R23 vs. 275/60R20).

The Range Rover’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the QX80 Luxe’s standard 60 series tires. The Range Rover’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the QX80 Premium Select/Sensory’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the QX80 Luxe. The Range Rover’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels on the QX80 Premium Select/Sensory.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The QX80 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the QX80, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The QX80’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Range Rover’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The QX80 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Range Rover SWB First Edition handles at .73 G’s, while the QX80 AWD pulls only .72 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover SWB’s turning circle is 5.4 feet tighter than the QX80’s (35.9 feet vs. 41.3 feet). The Range Rover LWB’s turning circle is 3.4 feet tighter than the QX80’s (37.9 feet vs. 41.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover has a 2.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the QX80 (11.6 vs. 9.2 inches), allowing the Range Rover to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Land Rover Range Rover may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 150 to 450 pounds less than the Infiniti QX80.

The Range Rover SWB is 11.3 inches shorter than the QX80, making the Range Rover easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Unibody construction lowers the Range Rover’s center of gravity significantly without reducing ground clearance. This contributes to better on the road handling and better off-road performance and stability. In addition, unibody construction makes the chassis stiffer, improving handling and reducing squeaks and rattles. The QX80 uses body-on-frame design instead.

The Range Rover uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The QX80 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Range Rover when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the tailgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The QX80 doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The QX80’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover’s tailgate can be opened and closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The QX80 doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the QX80, the Range Rover has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The QX80 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Range Rover’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The QX80’s parking brake has to be released manually.

The power windows standard on both the Range Rover and the QX80 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Range Rover is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The QX80 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Range Rover to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The QX80 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The QX80 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Range Rover to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The QX80 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Optional air conditioned front and second row seats keep the Range Rover’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The QX80 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Range Rover offers optional massaging front and second row seats, which keep the driver and middle row passengers. Massaging seats aren’t available in the QX80.

The Range Rover’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The QX80 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The Land Rover Range Rover outsold the Infiniti QX80 by 75% during the 2022 model year.
