Safety
Warranty
The 500X comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Compass’ 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.
Reliability
The engine in the 500X has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the Compass has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.
Transmission
A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Fiat 500X, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Compass.
Brakes and Stopping

Tires and Wheels
The 500X AWD’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Compass Trailhawk’s standard 65 series tires.
Suspension and Handling
The 500X has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Compass’ suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.
The 500X Pop handles at .79 G’s, while the Compass Trailhawk pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.
The 500X Pop executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the Compass Trailhawk (28 seconds @ .61 average G’s vs. 29.6 seconds @ .53 average G’s).
Chassis
The Fiat 500X may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 pounds less than the Jeep Compass.
The 500X is 6.2 inches shorter than the Compass, making the 500X easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
Passenger Space
The 500X has .2 inches more front legroom and 3 inches more rear hip room than the Compass.
The rear step up height for the 500X is 1.1 inches lower than the Compass (19.6” vs. 20.7”).
Towing
The 500X’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Compass’ (2000 vs. 0 pounds).
Ergonomics
The 500X’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Compass’ rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.
The 500X’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Compass’ standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.
Economic Advantages
Insurance will cost less for the 500X owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the 500X with a number “5” insurance rate while the Compass is rated higher at a number “10” rate.
According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the 500X is less expensive to operate than the Compass because typical repairs cost much less on the 500X than the Compass, including $149 less for a muffler, $12 less for front brake pads, $64 less for a starter, $261 less for front struts and $140 less for a timing belt/chain.
