The Edge has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The RX doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Edge. But it costs extra on the RX.

Both the Edge and the RX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available front and rear parking sensors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Ford Edge is safer than the Lexus RX:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Ford Edge is safer than the Lexus RX:

There are over 12 times as many Ford dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

The Edge has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The RX doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

The Edge’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 12 lbs.-ft. more torque (280 vs. 268) than the RX 350’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6. The Edge ST’s standard 2.7 turbo V6 produces 27 more horsepower (335 vs. 308) than the RX 450h’s standard 3.5 DOHC V6 hybrid.

Regardless of its engine, the Edge’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. Lexus only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the RX 450h, and doesn’t offer a disable button.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Edge uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The RX 450h requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Edge has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the RX Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (18.5 vs. 17.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Edge has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The RX doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifies the Ford Edge as a “Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle” (PZEV). The Lexus RX is only certified to emission levels ranging from “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV) to “Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (SULEV) standards.

For better traction, the Edge has larger standard tires than the RX (245/60R18 vs. 235/65R18). The Edge ST’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the RX (265/40R21 vs. 235/65R18).

The Edge SE/SEL’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the RX’s standard 65 series tires. The Edge ST’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the RX’s optional 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Edge ST offers optional 21-inch wheels. The RX’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Edge’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The RX doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Edge’s wheelbase is 2.4 inches longer than on the RX (112.2 inches vs. 109.8 inches).

The Edge ST handles at .83 G’s, while the RX 350 F Sport AWD pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Edge ST executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.5 seconds quicker than the RX 450h (26 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27.5 seconds @ .65 average G’s).

The Edge is 3.7 inches shorter than the RX, making the Edge easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Edge uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The RX doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Edge ST uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The RX doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Edge Titanium is quieter than the RX 350 F Sport AWD:

The Edge has .8 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front shoulder room, 1.2 inches more rear headroom, 2.6 inches more rear legroom, 1.4 inches more rear hip room and 2.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the RX.

The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the RX with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 16 cubic feet). The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the RX with its rear seat folded (73.4 vs. 32.6 cubic feet).

The Edge’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the RX’s (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

The Edge Titanium/ST’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The RX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Insurance will cost less for the Edge owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Edge will cost $1045 to $2925 less than the RX over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Edge is less expensive to operate than the RX because it costs $45 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Edge than the RX, including $858 less for a water pump, $6 less for front brake pads, $582 less for a starter, $81 less for fuel injection, $81 less for a fuel pump, $1018 less for a timing belt/chain and $1248 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Ford Edge will be $6148 to $8714 less than for the Lexus RX.
