The Ford Edge has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The XC60 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Edge. But it costs extra on the XC60.

Ford’s powertrain warranty covers the Edge 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC60. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the XC60 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 11 times as many Ford dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

The Edge has a standard “limp home system” to keep drivers from being stranded if most or all of the engine’s coolant is lost. The engine will run on only half of its cylinders at a time, reduce its power and light a warning lamp on the dashboard so the driver can get to a service station for repairs. The XC60 doesn’t offer a lost coolant limp home mode, so a coolant leak could strand you or seriously damage the truck’s engine.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Edge’s reliability 26 points higher than the XC60.

Power ranks Ford above average in initial quality. With 89 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is rated below average.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Ford Edge turbo 4 cyl. is faster than the XC60 B5 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder:

On the EPA test cycle the Edge 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder gets better fuel mileage than the XC60 B6 running its gasoline engine (21 city/28 hwy vs. 21 city/27 hwy).

Both the Edge and the XC60 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Edges have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The XC60 T8 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Edge uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The XC60 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Edge ST handles at .88 G’s, while the XC60 Recharge Core pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Edge ST executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the XC60 B5 Core AWD (26 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27.3 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

The front grille of the Edge uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC60 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Edge ST uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC60 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Edge has 10.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC60 (113.9 vs. 103).

The Edge has 2.2 inches more front headroom, 1.1 inches more front legroom, 2.1 inches more front shoulder room, 2.3 inches more rear headroom, 2.6 inches more rear legroom, 2.1 inches more rear hip room and 4.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the XC60.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Edge’s rear seats recline. The XC60’s rear seats don’t recline.

The front step up height for the Edge is 1.5 inches lower than the XC60 (17.5” vs. 19”). The Edge’s rear step up height is 1.5 inches lower than the XC60’s (18” vs. 19.5”).

The Edge (except SE) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC60 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Edge Titanium/ST’s optional Active Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The XC60 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Edge is less expensive to operate than the XC60 because it costs $54 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles.
