For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Bentley Bentayga have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Bentayga’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Bentayga and Grand Cherokee have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Bentayga has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Grand Cherokee’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Bentayga has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Bentayga. But it costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.

Both the Bentayga and the Grand Cherokee have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available night vision systems and lane departure warning systems.

Warranty

The Bentayga comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Grand Cherokee’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

Reliability

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Bentayga have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of the 5.7 V8 in the Grand Cherokee.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regardless of its engine, the Bentayga’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. Jeep doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system on the Grand Cherokee V8.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Bentayga’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Grand Cherokee:

The Bentayga SPEED offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The Bentayga stops much shorter than the Grand Cherokee:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Bentayga has larger tires than the Grand Cherokee (285/45R21 vs. 245/70R17). The Bentayga’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Grand Cherokee (285/45R21 vs. 275/45R21).

The Bentayga’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grand Cherokee Laredo’s standard 70 series tires. The Bentayga’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Grand Cherokee Summit’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Bentayga has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Grand Cherokee Laredo. The Bentayga’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the Grand Cherokee Summit.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the Bentayga uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Grand Cherokee, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Bentayga offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jeep doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Grand Cherokee.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Bentayga V8’s wheelbase is 1.2 inches longer than on the Grand Cherokee (117.9 inches vs. 116.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Bentayga is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 1.8 inches wider in the rear than on the Grand Cherokee.

The Bentayga SPEED handles at .93 G’s, while the Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 pulls only .60 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Bentayga SPEED executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 3.5 seconds quicker than the Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 (24.6 seconds @ .79 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Bentayga has a 1.3 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Grand Cherokee (9.7 vs. 8.4 inches), allowing the Bentayga to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The design of the Bentley Bentayga amounts to more than styling. The Bentayga has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .34 Cd. That is lower than the Grand Cherokee (.357). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Bentayga get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

The Bentayga offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Grand Cherokee can only carry 5.

Cargo Capacity

Pressing a button automatically lowers or raises the Bentayga’s second and third row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

Payload and Towing

The Bentayga’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Grand Cherokee’s (7165 vs. 3500 pounds).

The Bentayga has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Grand Cherokee (1510 vs. 1240 lbs.).

The Bentayga has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the Grand Cherokee (1510 vs. 1280 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Bentayga’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Grand Cherokee’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Bentayga has a standard locking fuel and charge port door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a locking fuel/charge port door.

The Bentayga’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Grand Cherokee’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Bentayga to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Bentayga has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Bentayga has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer cornering lights.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Bentayga offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

The Bentayga has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.

Both the Bentayga and the Grand Cherokee offer available massaging front seats. The Bentayga also offers optional massaging second row seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging rear seats aren’t available in the Grand Cherokee.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Bentley Bentayga has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) on the dashboard and one for the rear passengers. Wireless charging costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.
