The Outlander Sport has standard Active Front Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Front Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The HR-V doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Outlander Sport and the HR-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The Outlander Sport comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The HR-V’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander Sport 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Honda covers the HR-V. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the HR-V ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Outlander Sport’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the HR-V’s (7 vs. 5 years).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are more reliable than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi above average in long-term dependability. With 9 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Honda is rated below average.

The Outlander Sport’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 7 lbs.-ft. more torque (145 vs. 138) than the HR-V’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder. The Outlander Sport GT’s standard 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 10 more horsepower (168 vs. 158) and 29 lbs.-ft. more torque (167 vs. 138) than the HR-V’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder.

The Outlander Sport has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the HR-V (15.8 vs. 14 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Outlander Sport stops shorter than the HR-V:

The Outlander Sport has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The HR-V doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better maneuverability, the Outlander Sport’s turning circle is .3 feet tighter than the HR-V’s (34.8 feet vs. 35.1 feet). The Outlander Sport’s turning circle is 2.2 feet tighter than the HR-V Sport’s (34.8 feet vs. 37 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Outlander Sport has a 1.5 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the HR-V LX/EX-L (8.5 vs. 7 inches), allowing the Outlander Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Outlander Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 1.2 inches higher than on the HR-V Sport (8.5 vs. 7.3 inches).

The Outlander Sport is 7.9 inches shorter than the HR-V, making the Outlander Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Outlander Sport has 4.2 inches more rear hip room and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the HR-V.

The Outlander Sport’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The HR-V’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Outlander Sport’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Honda only offers heated mirrors on the HR-V Sport/EX-L.

The Outlander Sport has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The HR-V doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.
