Safety

The Mitsubishi Mirage has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Elantra Hybrid doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Mirage offers available Park Assist Sensors to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or in front of their vehicle. The Elantra Hybrid doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

Both the Mirage and the Elantra Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, rearview cameras, available daytime running lights and lane departure warning systems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Mirage is safer than the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid:

Transmission

The Mirage has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Elantra Hybrid doesn’t offer a CVT.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Mirage Hatchback’s turning circle is 5.2 feet tighter than the Elantra Hybrid’s (30.2 feet vs. 35.4 feet). The Mirage G4’s turning circle is 3.9 feet tighter than the Elantra Hybrid’s (31.5 feet vs. 35.4 feet).

Chassis

The Mitsubishi Mirage may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 850 to 900 pounds less than the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.

The Mirage G4 is 1 foot, 2.6 inches shorter than the Elantra Hybrid, making the Mirage easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Mirage is 6.3 inches narrower on average than the Elantra Hybrid, making the Mirage easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Cargo Capacity

The Mirage has a much larger trunk with its rear seat up than the Elantra Hybrid (17.1 vs. 14.2 cubic feet).

The Mirage’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The Elantra Hybrid’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

Ergonomics

The Mirage CVT offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The Elantra Hybrid doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Mirage SE/Black Edition’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Elantra Hybrid’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Model Availability

The Mitsubishi Mirage comes in sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid isn’t available as a station wagon.
