For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Volvo V60 Cross Country have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Jeep Renegade doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The V60 Cross Country’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Renegade doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the V60 Cross Country and Renegade have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The V60 Cross Country has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Renegade’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The V60 Cross Country has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Renegade doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard 360° Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Renegade only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The V60 Cross Country’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Renegade doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the V60 Cross Country and the Renegade have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The Volvo V60 Cross Country weighs 550 to 762 pounds more than the Jeep Renegade. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Volvo V60 Cross Country is safer than the Jeep Renegade:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Volvo V60 Cross Country is safer than the Jeep Renegade:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the V60 Cross Country, with its five-star roll-over rating, is 8% to 12.9% less likely to roll over than the Renegade, which received a three-star to four-star rating.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, with its optional vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the V60 Cross Country its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 106 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Renegade last would have qualified as only a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2019.

Warranty

The V60 Cross Country comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Renegade’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The V60 Cross Country’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Renegade’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the V60 Cross Country has a standard 210-amp alternator. The Renegade’s standard 150-amp alternator and largest (Auto) 160-amp alternator aren’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the V60 Cross Country has a standard 800-amp battery. The Renegade’s 500-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the V60 Cross Country is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the V60 Cross Country’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Renegade’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 1 place higher in reliability than Jeep.

Engine

The V60 Cross Country’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 70 more horsepower (247 vs. 177) and 48 lbs.-ft. more torque (258 vs. 210) than the Renegade’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Volvo V60 Cross Country is faster than the Jeep Renegade:

The V60 Cross Country has 3.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Renegade (15.9 vs. 12.7 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the V60 Cross Country’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Renegade:

The V60 Cross Country’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Renegade are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

The V60 Cross Country’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Renegade Trailhawk’s standard 65 series tires. The V60 Cross Country’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Renegade’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the V60 Cross Country has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Renegade. The V60 Cross Country’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the Renegade.

Suspension and Handling

The V60 Cross Country has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Renegade doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the V60 Cross Country’s wheelbase is 12 inches longer than on the Renegade (113.2 inches vs. 101.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the V60 Cross Country is 4.1 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Renegade.

The V60 Cross Country handles at .82 G’s, while the Renegade Trailhawk pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The V60 Cross Country executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.8 seconds quicker than the Renegade Trailhawk (27.2 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 29 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

Chassis

The V60 Cross Country is 7.3 inches shorter in height than the Renegade, making the V60 Cross Country much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The design of the Volvo V60 Cross Country amounts to more than styling. The V60 Cross Country has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .33 Cd. That is lower than the Renegade (.36 to .37) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the V60 Cross Country get better fuel mileage.

For excellent aerodynamics, the V60 Cross Country has standard flush composite headlights. The Renegade has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

Passenger Space

The V60 Cross Country has 1.1 inches more front legroom, 2.2 inches more front hip room, .2 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more rear hip room than the Renegade.

Cargo Capacity

The V60 Cross Country has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Renegade with its rear seat up (23.2 vs. 18.5 cubic feet). The V60 Cross Country has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Renegade with its rear seat folded (60.5 vs. 50.8 cubic feet).

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the V60 Cross Country easier. The V60 Cross Country’s trunk lift-over height is 25.4 inches, while the Renegade’s liftover is 30.2 inches.

The V60 Cross Country’s cargo area is larger than the Renegade’s in almost every dimension:

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the V60 Cross Country’s power liftgate can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Renegade doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening liftgate.

Servicing Ease

The V60 Cross Country uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Renegade uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

When two different drivers share the V60 Cross Country, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver and front passenger’s seat positions and outside mirror angle. The Renegade doesn’t offer a memory system.

The V60 Cross Country Ultimate has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Renegade doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The V60 Cross Country’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Renegade’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the V60 Cross Country the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Renegade can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Renegade doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The V60 Cross Country’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Renegade Latitude/Altitude/(Red)’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the V60 Cross Country to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Renegade doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The V60 Cross Country’s LED headlights produce a whiter, brighter light (up to 3x) using five times less power than the Renegade’s standard halogen headlights. LED lights also light instantly and last over twenty times longer than halogen.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The V60 Cross Country’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the Renegade’s headlights are rated “Acceptable” to “Poor.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The V60 Cross Country offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Renegade doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Renegade only offers an automatic headlight on/off feature as an extra cost option.

The Renegade’s optional cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The V60 Cross Country’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the V60 Cross Country to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Renegade doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the V60 Cross Country is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Renegade’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The V60 Cross Country’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Renegade offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The V60 Cross Country has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the Renegade. The V60 Cross Country also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Renegade.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the V60 Cross Country Ultimate keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Renegade doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The Renegade doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

The V60 Cross Country offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Renegade.

Both the V60 Cross Country and the Renegade offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the V60 Cross Country has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Renegade doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Volvo V60 Cross Country offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Renegade doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
