Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Nissan Armada are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Toyota Sequoia doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

Full-time four-wheel drive is optional on the Armada. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Sequoia.

The Armada’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Sequoia doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Armada and the Sequoia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan above average in initial quality. With 5 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated lower.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Nissan Armada uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Sequoia requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Armada has 3.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Sequoia (26 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels

The Armada has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Sequoia doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The Armada has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Armada flat and controlled during cornering. The Sequoia’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The rear suspension of the Armada uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Sequoia, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For greater off-road capability the Armada S/SV has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Sequoia (9.1 vs. 8.6 inches), allowing the Armada to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Armada SL/Platinum’s minimum ground clearance is .1 inch higher than on the Sequoia TRD Pro (9.2 vs. 9.1 inches).

Chassis

The Armada SL/Midnight/Platinum uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Sequoia doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Armada has 1.7 inches more front headroom, .7 inches more front legroom, 1.6 inches more rear headroom, 1.8 inches more rear legroom, 1.6 inches more rear shoulder room and .8 inches more third row headroom than the Sequoia.

Cargo Capacity

The Armada’s cargo area provides more volume than the Sequoia.

Recommendations

The Nissan Armada outsold the Toyota Sequoia by over five to one during the 2022 model year.
