Compare the2023 Toyota TundraVS 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Tundra have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Toyota Tundra has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Tundra has standard head airbag curtains for front and rear seats which act as a forgiving barrier between the driver and outboard passenger's upper bodies and the window and pillars. Combined with high-strength steel door beams and lower side airbags this system increases head protection in broadside collisions. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn't offer side airbag protection for the head and are only available for the front seats.

The Tundra has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Tundra has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Tundra and the Hummer EV Pickup have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available four-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Tundra its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 29 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Hummer EV Pickup has not been tested, yet.

The Tundra’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Hummer EV Pickup’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Tundra for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. GMC only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Hummer EV Pickup.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in long-term dependability. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, GMC is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota first in overall reliability. GMC is ranked 21st.

The Tundra stops much shorter than the Hummer EV Pickup:

The Tundra Capstone’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Hummer EV Pickup’s 55 series tires.

The Tundra has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your work or a trip. A full size spare costs extra on the Hummer EV Pickup. Without the option you must depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Tundra 5.5-foot bed Crew Cab Pickup’s wheelbase is 10.1 inches longer than on the Hummer EV Pickup (145.7 inches vs. 135.6 inches). The Tundra 6.5-foot bed Crew Cab Pickup’s wheelbase is 22.1 inches longer than on the Hummer EV Pickup (157.7 inches vs. 135.6 inches).

The Toyota Tundra may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 2800 to 3900 pounds less than the GMC Hummer EV Pickup.

The Tundra is 5.8 inches narrower on average than the Hummer EV Pickup, making the Tundra easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The Tundra Crew Cab Pickup shortbed has a much larger cargo box than the Hummer EV Regular Cab shortbed (45.8 vs. 36.7 cubic feet).

The Hummer EV Pickup’s spare tire is stored in the cargo area, where it diminishes the useable cargo capacity and interferes with loading and unloading. The Tundra’s spare is out of the way underneath.

The Tundra’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Hummer EV Pickup’s (8300 vs. 7500 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the GMC Hummer EV Pickup is only 7500 pounds. The Tundra Extended Cab Pickup offers up to a 12000 lbs. towing capacity.

The Tundra Crew Cab Pickup 4x4 has a much higher standard payload capacity than the Hummer EV Pickup (1820 vs. 1300 lbs.).

The Tundra has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the Hummer EV Pickup (1940 vs. 1300 lbs.).

The Tundra (except SR/SR5/Limited/TRD Pro) offers an available heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Tundra’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Hummer EV Pickup’s power windows’ switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the Tundra the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the Hummer EV Pickup can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Tundra to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Tundra Limited/Platinum/1794/TRD Pro/Capstone has standard front air conditioned seats and the Tundra Platinum/1794/Capstone also has them in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Toyota Tundra comes in extended cab and crew cab bodystyles; the GMC Hummer EV Pickup isn’t available as an extended cab.

The Tundra is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Hummer EV Pickup doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Toyota Tundra outsold the GMC Hummer EV Pickup by over 122 to one during 2022.
