Safety

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Renegade. But it costs extra on the UX.

Both the Renegade and the UX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights and rear parking sensors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Renegade is safer than the Lexus UX:

Warranty

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance (up to 3 oil changes) on the Renegade for 2 years and -10,000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the UX (3/unlimited vs. 1/10,000).

There are almost 10 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Renegade’s warranty.

Reliability

The engine in the Renegade has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engine in the UX has dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

Engine

The Renegade’s standard 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder produces 210 lbs.-ft. more torque (210 vs. ) than the UX’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

Both the Renegade and UX have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. The Renegade has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

The Renegade has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the UX (12.7 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Renegade has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The UX doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

The Renegade stops much shorter than the UX:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Renegade’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the UX (235/45R19 vs. 225/50R18).

The Renegade’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the UX’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Renegade offers optional 19-inch wheels. The UX’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Renegade Trailhawk offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the UX; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Chassis

The Renegade is 10.4 inches shorter than the UX, making the Renegade easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Renegade (except Trailhawk) uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The UX doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Renegade has 9.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the UX (100.1 vs. 90.4).

The Renegade has 3.8 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room, 4.2 inches more rear headroom, 2 inches more rear legroom and 2.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the UX.

Cargo Capacity

The Renegade has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the UX (18.5 vs. 17.1 cubic feet).

Towing

The Renegade has a 2000 lbs. towing capacity. The UX has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Renegade uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The UX doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The power windows standard on both the Renegade and the UX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Renegade is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The UX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Renegade offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The UX doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Renegade Limited’s optional Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The UX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Renegade owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Renegade will cost $395 less than the UX over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Jeep Renegade will be $5294 to $6997 less than for the Lexus UX.
