2023 Jaguar E-Pace
2022 Lexus RX

Safety

Both the E-Pace and RX have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The E-Pace has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The RX’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the E-Pace. But it costs extra on the RX.

Both the E-Pace and the RX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The E-Pace comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The RX’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the E-Pace for 4 years and 50,000 miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the RX (5/60,000 vs. 1/10,000).

Engine

The E-Pace has more powerful engines than the RX:

Torque

E-Pace P250 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder

269 lbs.-ft.

RX 350 3.5 DOHC V6

268 lbs.-ft.

RX 450h 3.5 DOHC V6 hybrid

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the E-Pace P250 gets better fuel mileage than the RX 350 AWD (20 city/26 hwy vs. 19 city/26 hwy).

Both the E-Pace and the RX 450h have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All E-Paces have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Jaguar E-Pace higher (7 out of 10) than the Lexus RX (5 to 7). This means the E-Pace produces up to 8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the RX every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Jaguar E-Pace, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the RX.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the E-Pace’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the RX:

E-Pace

RX

Front Rotors

13.7 inches

12.9 inches

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the E-Pace’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the RX (245/45R20 vs. 235/65R18).

The E-Pace’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the RX’s standard 65 series tires. The E-Pace’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the RX’s optional 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the E-Pace has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the RX. The E-Pace’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the RX.

Suspension and Handling

The E-Pace SE handles at .83 G’s, while the RX 350 F Sport AWD pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the E-Pace’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the RX’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.8 feet).

Chassis

The Jaguar E-Pace may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 800 pounds less than the Lexus RX.

The E-Pace is 1 foot, 7.5 inches shorter than the RX, making the E-Pace easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the E-Pace SE is quieter than the RX 350 F Sport AWD (76 vs. 77 dB).

Cargo Capacity

The E-Pace has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the RX with its rear seat up (22.4 vs. 16 cubic feet). The E-Pace has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the RX with its rear seat folded (49.5 vs. 32.6 cubic feet).

Towing

The E-Pace’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the RX’s (3968 vs. 0 pounds).

A Trailer Stability Assist is standard on the E-Pace, using the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the RX.

Ergonomics

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the E-Pace to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The RX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Jaguar E-Pace has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the RX.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the E-Pace owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the E-Pace will cost $470 less than the RX over a five-year period.
