Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Infiniti QX50 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision. The BMW X6 doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Infiniti QX50 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X6 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the QX50 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The X6 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Both the QX50 and the X6 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Warranty

The QX50 comes with a full 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The X6’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 10,000 miles sooner.

Infiniti’s powertrain warranty covers the QX50 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than BMW covers the X6. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the X6 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the QX50’s reliability 19 points higher than the X6.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Infiniti vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Infiniti 1 place higher in reliability than BMW.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Infiniti QX50 higher (6 out of 10) than the BMW X6 (3). This means the QX50 produces up to 23.4 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the X6 every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The QX50 has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The X6 doesn’t offer a CVT.

Tires and Wheels

The QX50 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The X6 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the QX50 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. Run-flat tires aren’t available on some tire packages on the X6.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the QX50’s turning circle is 4.9 feet tighter than the X6’s (36.4 feet vs. 41.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the QX50 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the X6 xDrive40i (8.6 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the QX50 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Infiniti QX50 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1000 pounds less than the BMW X6.

The QX50 is 10.1 inches shorter than the X6, making the QX50 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Infiniti QX50 amounts to more than styling. The QX50 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the X6 (.34 to .35) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the QX50 get better fuel mileage.

The QX50 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The X6 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The QX50 has 1.7 inches more front headroom, 1.6 inches more rear headroom and 3 inches more rear legroom than the X6.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the QX50’s rear seats recline. The X6’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The QX50 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the X6 with its rear seat up (31.4 vs. 27.4 cubic feet). The QX50 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the X6 with its rear seat folded (65.1 vs. 59.6 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the QX50 has a standard rear wiper. The X6 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Infiniti QX50 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) for the front seat. Wireless charging costs extra on the X6.

Model Availability

The QX50 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The X6 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the QX50 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the QX50 will cost $1055 to $7390 less than the X6 over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the QX50 is less expensive to operate than the X6 because it costs $518 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the QX50 than the X6, including $429 less for a water pump, $996 less for a muffler, $185 less for front brake pads, $95 less for a starter, $136 less for fuel injection, $300 less for a fuel pump, $195 less for front struts, $19 less for a timing belt/chain and $978 less for a power steering pump.
