Compare the2023 Genesis G80VS 2023 Toyota Crown

The G80’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Crown doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Crown doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G80’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Crown doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the G80 and the Crown have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G80 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 112 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Crown has not been tested, yet.

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Crown’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Crown. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Crown ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The G80’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Crown’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G80 for 1 year and 11000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Crown (3/36,000 vs. 2/25000).

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The Crown isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 16 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked 14th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 3 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is ranked fifth.

The G80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 64 more horsepower (300 vs. 236) than the Crown’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The G80 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 35 more horsepower (375 vs. 340) than the Crown Platinum’s standard 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

The G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the Crown (17.2 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Crown (19.3 vs. 14.5 gallons).

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis G80, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the Crown.

For better stopping power the G80’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Crown:

The G80 3.5T’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Crown are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the G80 has larger standard tires than the Crown (245/50R18 vs. 225/55R19). The G80 Advanced/Sport/2.5T Sport Prestige’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Crown (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 225/55R19).

The G80 2.5T Standard’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Crown’s standard 55 series tires. The G80 3.5T Sport Prestige’s optional 245/40R20 front and 275/35R20 rear tires have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile than the Crown’s optional 45 series tires.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G80’s wheelbase is 6.3 inches longer than on the Crown (118.5 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G80 is 1.2 inches wider in the front and 1.7 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Crown.

For better maneuverability, the G80’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the Crown’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.8 feet).

The Genesis G80 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 300 pounds less than the Toyota Crown.

The G80 has 2.9 inches more front headroom, .1 inches more front legroom, 1.2 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom and 2 inches more rear shoulder room than the Crown.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the G80’s trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Crown doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its trunk, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The engine in the G80 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Crown. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The G80 3.5T offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Crown doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The G80’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Crown’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The G80 Sport/Sport Prestige has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Crown.

The G80 Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Crown Platinum’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

The G80 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The Crown doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
