Compare the2023 Genesis G80VS 2023 Volvo S90

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G80 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The S90 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The S90 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Both the G80 and the S90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The S90’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the S90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the G80 has a standard 850-amp battery. The S90’s 800-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the G80’s reliability 37 points higher than the S90.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The S90 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 100 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 33rd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 101 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 30th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 2 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

The G80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 5 more horsepower (300 vs. 295) and 1 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 310) than the S90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the G80 2.5T 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the S90 B6:

Both the G80 and the S90 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All G80s have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The S90 T8 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

The G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (17.2 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (19.3 vs. 15.9 gallons).

The front and rear suspension of the G80 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G80 is .5 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the track on the S90.

The G80 handles at .91 G’s, while the S90 pulls only .90 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The G80 AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the S90 (25.9 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 26.3 seconds @ .68 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the G80’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the S90’s (38.1 feet vs. 38.7 feet).

The Genesis G80 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 350 pounds less than the Volvo S90.

The G80 is 3.4 inches shorter than the S90, making the G80 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Genesis G80 amounts to more than styling. The G80 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the S90 (.28 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G80 get better fuel mileage.

The G80 has 3.3 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom and 1.7 inches more rear shoulder room than the S90.

The engine in the G80 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The G80’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Consumer Reports rated the G80’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the S90’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the G80 has standard extendable sun visors. The S90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The G80 Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The S90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The G80 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Genesis G80, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Volvo S90 isn't recommended.
