For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Genesis G80 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Cadillac CT5 doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The G80’s optional pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The CT5 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the G80 and CT5 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The G80 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The CT5’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The CT5 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G80 has standard Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The CT5 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The G80’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The CT5 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the G80 and the CT5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Cadillac CT5:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Genesis G80 is safer than the Cadillac CT5:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G80 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 112 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The CT5 has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The CT5’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G80 4 years and 30,000 miles longer than Cadillac covers the CT5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the CT5 ends after only 6 years or 70,000 miles.

The G80’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the CT5’s (7 vs. 6 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the CT5.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the G80’s reliability 30 points higher than the CT5.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The CT5 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 8th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 9th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 5 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

Engine

The G80 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 63 more horsepower (300 vs. 237) and 53 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 258) than the CT5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The G80 3.5T’s standard 3.5 turbo V6 produces 40 more horsepower (375 vs. 335) than the CT5’s optional 3.0 turbo V6.

As tested in Motor Trend the G80 2.5T 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the Cadillac CT5 turbo 4 cyl.:

The G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the CT5 (19.3 vs. 17.5 gallons).

For better stopping power the G80’s brake rotors are larger than those on the CT5:

Tires and Wheels

The G80 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the CT5; it requires you to depend on its optional run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G80’s wheelbase is 2.5 inches longer than on the CT5 (118.5 inches vs. 116 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G80 is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than the track on the CT5.

The G80 handles at .91 G’s, while the CT5 Premium Luxury pulls only .87 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the G80’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the CT5’s (38.1 feet vs. 39 feet). The G80’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the CT5 AWD’s (38.1 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

Passenger Space

The G80 has 4.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the CT5 (103.8 vs. 99).

The G80 has 2.1 inches more front headroom, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 1.6 inches more rear headroom, .8 inches more rear legroom and 1.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the CT5.

Cargo Capacity

The G80 has a much larger trunk than the CT5 (13.1 vs. 11.9 cubic feet).

With its sedan body style and remote trunk release lockout, the G80 offers cargo security. The CT5’s non-lockable folding seat defeats cargo security.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the G80 offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The CT5 doesn’t offer a power trunk.

Ergonomics

If the windows are left open on the G80 the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the CT5 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The G80 has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The CT5 doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

Consumer Reports rated the G80’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the CT5’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the G80 Advanced/Sport/Sport Prestige to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The CT5 doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

The G80 has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the CT5. The G80 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CT5.

The G80 Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The CT5 Premium Luxury/Sport’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

Economic Advantages

The G80 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the G80 will retain 43.88% to 43.95% of its original price after five years, while the CT5 only retains 41.65% to 41.68%.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Genesis G80, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Cadillac CT5 isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G80 first among upper midsize premium cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The CT5 isn’t in the top three in its category.
