To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the CX-30. But it costs extra on the UX.

The CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus has a standard 360° View Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The UX only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the CX-30 and UX have rear cross-traffic warning, but the CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic.

Both the CX-30 and the UX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available blind spot warning systems.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mazda CX-30 is safer than the Lexus UX:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Mazda CX-30 is safer than the Lexus UX:

Warranty

There are over 2 times as many Mazda dealers as there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the CX-30’s warranty.

Engine

The CX-30’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 10 more horsepower (191 vs. 181) and 186 lbs.-ft. more torque (186 vs. ) than the UX’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The CX-30’s optional 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 69 more horsepower (250 vs. 181) and 320 lbs.-ft. more torque (320 vs. ) than the UX’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Mazda CX-30 4 cyl. is faster than the Lexus UX:

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the CX-30 (except Turbo)’s fuel efficiency. The UX doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The CX-30 has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the UX (12.7 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

The CX-30 stops shorter than the UX:

Tires and Wheels

The CX-30 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the UX; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The CX-30 Premium handles at .83 G’s, while the UX 250h F Sport Handling AWD pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The CX-30 Premium executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the UX 250h F Sport Handling AWD (27.4 seconds @ .62 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

Chassis

The CX-30 is 4 inches shorter than the UX, making the CX-30 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The CX-30 has 3.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the UX (94.1 vs. 90.4).

The CX-30 has .8 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front hip room, .5 inches more front shoulder room, 2 inches more rear headroom, 3.2 inches more rear legroom, .9 inches more rear hip room and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the UX.

Cargo Capacity

The CX-30 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the UX (20.2 vs. 17.1 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The CX-30’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The UX’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Recommendations

The Mazda CX-30 outsold the Lexus UX by over five to one during 2022.
