In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Grand Cherokee are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The QX50 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk/Overland/Summit helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The QX50 doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The Grand Cherokee Summit’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The QX50 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Grand Cherokee and the QX50 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Warranty

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Cherokee for 3 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance (up to 3 oil changes). Infiniti doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the QX50.

There are almost 12 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Infiniti dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Cherokee’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Grand Cherokee has a standard 160-amp alternator (240-amp - Grand Cherokee optional). The QX50’s 130-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Cherokee has a standard 850-amp battery. The QX50 only offers a 720-amp battery.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Infiniti vehicles. With 5 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Jeep higher than Infiniti.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Infiniti With 27 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Jeep higher than Infiniti.

Engine

The Grand Cherokee’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 25 more horsepower (293 vs. 268) than the QX50’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Grand Cherokee’s optional 5.7 V8 produces 89 more horsepower (357 vs. 268) and 110 lbs.-ft. more torque (390 vs. 280) than the QX50’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 107 more horsepower (375 vs. 268) and 190 lbs.-ft. more torque (470 vs. 280) than the QX50’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Grand Cherokee 4xe 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid is faster than the Infiniti QX50:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Grand Cherokee running on electricity gets better mileage than the QX50:

The Grand Cherokee 4xe can travel with zero emissions for 26 miles. The QX50 can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Grand Cherokee V8’s fuel efficiency. The QX50 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Regenerative brakes improve the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The QX50 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Grand Cherokee V6/4xe’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip (V6 only). The QX50 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Cherokee uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended on Grand Cherokee 4xe for maximum performance). The QX50 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe Hybrid’s standard fuel tank has 3 gallons more fuel capacity than the QX50 (19 vs. 16 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Grand Cherokee’s standard fuel tank has 7 gallons more fuel capacity than the QX50 (23 vs. 16 gallons).

The Grand Cherokee has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The QX50 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Cherokee’s brake rotors are larger than those on the QX50:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Cherokee has larger standard tires than the QX50 (245/70R17 vs. 235/55R19). The Grand Cherokee Summit’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the QX50 (275/45R21 vs. 255/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Grand Cherokee Summit offers optional 21-inch wheels. The QX50’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the QX50; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Cherokee has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The QX50’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The QX50 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The Grand Cherokee offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The QX50’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The QX50 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Cherokee’s wheelbase is 6.5 inches longer than on the QX50 (116.7 inches vs. 110.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Cherokee is 1 inch wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the QX50.

The Grand Cherokee’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52% to 48%) than the QX50’s (57.7% to 42.3%). This gives the Grand Cherokee more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Air Suspension has a 2.3 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the QX50 (10.9 vs. 8.6 inches), allowing the Grand Cherokee to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The front grille of the Grand Cherokee uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The QX50 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Grand Cherokee has 2.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the QX50 (107 vs. 104.4).

The Grand Cherokee has 1.7 inches more front legroom, 1.8 inches more front hip room, 1.3 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 2.5 inches more rear hip room and .9 inches more rear shoulder room than the QX50.

Cargo Capacity

The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the QX50 with its rear seat up (37.7 vs. 31.4 cubic feet). The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the QX50 with its rear seat folded (70.8 vs. 65.1 cubic feet).

Towing

The Grand Cherokee’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the QX50’s (3500 vs. 0 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Infiniti QX50 AWD is only 3000 pounds. The Grand Cherokee 4x4 offers up to a 7200 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Cherokee 4WD with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Cherokee can be unhitched and driven around locally. The QX50 can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Grand Cherokee uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The QX50 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Grand Cherokee is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the QX50. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the QX50 Essential/Sensory/Autograph, the Grand Cherokee 4xe/Limited/Trailhawk/Overland/Summit offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Cherokee’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The QX50 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The power windows standard on both the Grand Cherokee and the QX50 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Grand Cherokee is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The QX50 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The Grand Cherokee’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Infiniti only offers heated mirrors on the QX50 Luxe/Essential/Sensory/Autograph.

The Grand Cherokee’s optional rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The QX50 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Grand Cherokee’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The QX50 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Grand Cherokee Overland Lux Tech/Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the QX50.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The QX50 doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The QX50 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Grand Cherokee Summit’s Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The QX50 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Grand Cherokee owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Grand Cherokee will cost $550 to $5170 less than the QX50 over a five-year period.

The Grand Cherokee will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Grand Cherokee will retain 52.29% to 57.18% of its original price after five years, while the QX50 only retains 43.84% to 45.08%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Jeep Grand Cherokee will be $4674 to $7455 less than for the Infiniti QX50.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Grand Cherokee third among midsize SUVs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The QX50 isn’t in the top three.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee outsold the Infiniti QX50 by almost 23 to one during the 2022 model year.
