Compare the2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L VS 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Mitsubishi Outlander doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Grand Cherokee L Overland/Summit helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Outlander doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the Grand Cherokee L and the Outlander have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L weighs 721 to 1686 pounds more than the Mitsubishi Outlander. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Grand Cherokee L’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Outlander’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Cherokee L for 3 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance (up to 3 oil changes). Mitsubishi doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Outlander.

There are over 7 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Mitsubishi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Cherokee L’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Mitsubishi vehicles. With 27 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Jeep higher than Mitsubishi.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Mitsubishi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Jeep 1 place higher in reliability than Mitsubishi.

The Grand Cherokee L’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 112 more horsepower (293 vs. 181) and 79 lbs.-ft. more torque (260 vs. 181) than the Outlander’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder. The Grand Cherokee L’s optional 5.7 V8 produces 176 more horsepower (357 vs. 181) and 209 lbs.-ft. more torque (390 vs. 181) than the Outlander’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Jeep Grand Cherokee L is faster than the Mitsubishi Outlander:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Grand Cherokee L V8’s fuel efficiency. The Outlander doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Grand Cherokee L V6’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Grand Cherokee L has 8.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Outlander (23 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better traction, the Grand Cherokee L has larger standard tires than the Outlander (265/60R18 vs. 235/60R18). The Grand Cherokee L Summit’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Outlander (275/45R21 vs. 255/45R20).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Grand Cherokee L Summit offers optional 21-inch wheels. The Outlander’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Grand Cherokee L offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Outlander; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Grand Cherokee L offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Outlander’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Grand Cherokee L offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee L’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Outlander doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The Grand Cherokee L has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Outlander doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Cherokee L’s wheelbase is 15.2 inches longer than on the Outlander (121.7 inches vs. 106.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Cherokee L is 2.7 inches wider in the front and 2.3 inches wider in the rear than on the Outlander.

The Grand Cherokee L’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the Outlander’s (57% to 43%). This gives the Grand Cherokee L more stable handling and braking.

For greater off-road capability the Grand Cherokee L Laredo/Limited has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Outlander ES (8.5 vs. 8.3 inches), allowing the Grand Cherokee L to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Grand Cherokee L Overland/Summit’s minimum ground clearance is 2.5 inches higher than on the Outlander SE/SEL (10.9 vs. 8.4 inches).

For excellent aerodynamics, the Grand Cherokee L has standard flush composite headlights. The Outlander has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Grand Cherokee L uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Outlander doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Grand Cherokee L has 33.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Outlander (159.1 vs. 125.5).

The Grand Cherokee L has 3.4 inches more front hip room, 1.3 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, 3 inches more rear hip room, 2.1 inches more rear shoulder room, 2.8 inches more third row headroom, 11.6 inches more third row legroom, .8 inches more third row hip room and .7 inches more third row shoulder room than the Outlander.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Cherokee L’s middle row seats recline. The Outlander’s middle row seats don’t recline.

The Grand Cherokee L’s cargo area provides more volume than the Outlander.

Both the Grand Cherokee L and the Outlander offer second row automatic folding seats. The Grand Cherokee L Overland/Summit’s third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a button. The Outlander doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

A standard locking glovebox keeps your small valuables safer in the Grand Cherokee L. The Outlander doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Grand Cherokee L’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Outlander’s (3500 vs. 2000 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Mitsubishi Outlander is only 2000 pounds. The Grand Cherokee L 4x4 offers up to a 7200 lbs. towing capacity.

The engine in the Grand Cherokee L is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Outlander. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Outlander SEL, the Grand Cherokee L Limited/Overland/Summit offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Cherokee L’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Outlander does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Grand Cherokee L’s standard front power windows lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Outlander’s standard power windows’ passenger windows don’t open automatically.

On a hot day the Grand Cherokee L’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Outlander can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Grand Cherokee L has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Outlander doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The Grand Cherokee L’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Mitsubishi only offers heated mirrors on the Outlander SE/SEL.

The Grand Cherokee L Limited/Overland/Summit’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Outlander offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Optional air conditioned front and second row seats keep the Grand Cherokee L’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Outlander doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Grand Cherokee L Overland Lux Tech/Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Outlander.

The Grand Cherokee L offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Outlander doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Grand Cherokee L Summit’s Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Outlander doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Insurance will cost less for the Grand Cherokee L owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Grand Cherokee L will cost $670 less than the Outlander over a five-year period.

The Grand Cherokee L will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Grand Cherokee L will retain 52.42% to 55.67% of its original price after five years, while the Outlander only retains 45.74% to 48.71%.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its December 2021 issue and they ranked the Jeep Grand Cherokee L Limited 4x4 higher than the Mitsubishi Outlander SEL AWC.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Grand Cherokee L third among midsize suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Outlander isn’t in the top three.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee outsold the Mitsubishi Outlander by almost six to one during the 2022 model year.
