A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Mercedes AMG GLB doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Grand Cherokee L are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The Grand Cherokee L has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Grand Cherokee L has a standard backup collision prevention system that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Grand Cherokee L Overland/Summit helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The Grand Cherokee L’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the AMG GLB.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Grand Cherokee L’s standard rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Grand Cherokee L and the AMG GLB have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L weighs 655 to 1410 pounds more than the Mercedes AMG GLB. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Grand Cherokee L 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the AMG GLB. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the AMG GLB ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Jeep pays for scheduled maintenance on the Grand Cherokee L for 3 years and unlimited miles. Jeep will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance (up to 3 oil changes). Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the AMG GLB.

There are over 6 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Mercedes dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Cherokee L’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Cherokee L has a standard 850-amp battery. The AMG GLB only offers a 800-amp battery.

The battery on the Grand Cherokee L is under the seat, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Grand Cherokee L’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The AMG GLB’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Jeep 1 place higher in reliability than Mercedes.

The Grand Cherokee L’s optional 5.7 V8 produces 55 more horsepower (357 vs. 302) and 95 lbs.-ft. more torque (390 vs. 295) than the AMG GLB’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Grand Cherokee L V8’s fuel efficiency. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 5.7 V8 engine for maximum performance). The AMG GLB requires premium, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Cherokee L has 7.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the AMG GLB (23 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Grand Cherokee L has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Grand Cherokee L has larger standard tires than the AMG GLB (265/60R18 vs. 235/50R19). The Grand Cherokee L Summit’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the AMG GLB (275/45R21 vs. 255/40R20).

The Grand Cherokee L has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Cherokee L offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the AMG GLB; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed. Some tire options on the AMG GLB don’t have a run-flat feature, either.

The Grand Cherokee L has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The AMG GLB’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Grand Cherokee L offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee L’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Cherokee L’s wheelbase is 10.3 inches longer than on the AMG GLB (121.7 inches vs. 111.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Cherokee L is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 2.6 inches wider in the rear than on the AMG GLB.

For better maneuverability, the Grand Cherokee L’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the AMG GLB’s (38.4 feet vs. 41 feet).

The Grand Cherokee L has a 3500 lbs. towing capacity. The AMG GLB has no towing capacity.

The Grand Cherokee L 4WD with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Cherokee L can be unhitched and driven around locally. The AMG GLB can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Grand Cherokee L uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The engine in the Grand Cherokee L is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the AMG GLB. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Grand Cherokee L’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The AMG GLB does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Grand Cherokee L has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the AMG GLB only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Grand Cherokee L has standard extendable sun visors. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Grand Cherokee L to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the Grand Cherokee L and the AMG GLB offer optional heated front seats. The Grand Cherokee L Limited/Overland/Summit also has standard heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated second row seats aren’t available in the AMG GLB.

Optional air conditioned front and second row seats keep the Grand Cherokee L’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Grand Cherokee L is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The AMG GLB doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The Grand Cherokee L will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Grand Cherokee L will retain 52.42% to 55.67% of its original price after five years, while the AMG GLB only retains 45.67%.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Grand Cherokee L third among midsize suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The AMG GLB isn’t in the top three.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee outsold the Mercedes GLB by almost 12 to one during the 2022 model year.
