Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Genesis G90 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Rolls-Royce Ghost doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G90 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The Ghost doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The G90 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Ghost doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Both the G90 and the Ghost have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, daytime pedestrian crash prevention, and nighttime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G90 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2023, a rating granted to only 29 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Ghost has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The G90 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Ghost’s 4-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G90 6 years longer than Rolls-Royce covers the Ghost. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Ghost ends after only 4 years.

The G90’s corrosion warranty is 3 years longer than the Ghost’s (7 vs. 4 years).

There are over 8 times as many Genesis dealers as there are Rolls-Royce dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the G90’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the G90 gets better mileage than the Ghost:

MPG

G90

AWD

3.5 turbo V6

18 city/26 hwy

3.5 turbo/supercharged V6 Hybrid

17 city/24 hwy

Ghost

AWD

6.6 turbo V12

12 city/19 hwy

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the G90’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The Ghost doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Genesis G90 higher (5 out of 10) than the Rolls-Royce Ghost (3). This means the G90 produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Ghost every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

For more complete vehicle control the G90 has a manually controlled automatic, with the available convenience of an automatic transmission and the complete gear control of a manual transmission without the inconvenience of a clutch. A manually controlled automatic allows the driver to eliminate unwanted shifts and maximize engine braking by down shifting while cornering. The Ghost doesn’t offer a transmission that allows complete gear control.

Tires and Wheels

The G90 3.5T has a standard space-saver spare (not available on 3.5T e-SC) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Ghost; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The G90’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50.6% to 49.4%) than the Ghost’s (53% to 47%). This gives the G90 more stable handling and braking.

For better maneuverability, the G90 3.5T’s turning circle is 5.6 feet tighter than the Ghost’s (37.1 feet vs. 42.7 feet).

Chassis

The Genesis G90 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 750 pounds less than the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

The G90 is 10.6 inches shorter than the Ghost, making the G90 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

For excellent aerodynamics, the G90 has standard flush composite headlights. The Ghost has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

Passenger Space

The G90 has .3 inches more front headroom, .7 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room and .9 inches more rear shoulder room than the Ghost.

Ergonomics

The G90 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Ghost doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the G90 has standard extendable sun visors. The Ghost doesn’t offer extendable visors.

A power rear sunshade and rear side window sunshades are standard in the G90 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Ghost doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

The G90’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Ghost’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.

Recommendations

The Genesis G90 outsold the Rolls-Royce Ghost by over two to one during 2022.
