Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Golf R ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Civic Type R’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Golf R’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are over 67 percent more Honda dealers than there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Civic Type R’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Honda vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. With 47 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Honda higher than Volkswagen.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 19 places higher in reliability than Volkswagen.

The Civic Type R’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 30 lbs.-ft. more torque (310 vs. 280) than the Golf R Manual’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Civic Type R’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 15 lbs.-ft. more torque (310 vs. 295) than the Golf R DSG’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the Civic Type R gets better fuel mileage than the Golf R Manual (22 city/28 hwy vs. 20 city/28 hwy).

The Civic Type R has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Golf R doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

To facilitate fast shifting and allow the driver to focus on the road, the Civic Type R has a standard up-shift light to indicate when the engine is approaching redline. The Golf R doesn’t offer an up-shift light.

The Honda Civic Type R has a downshift rev synchronizer that automatically raises engine speed to make downshifts perfectly smooth. This keeps the car from lurching during downshifts, preventing loss of control during cornering. The Golf R doesn’t offer a downshift rev synchronizer.

For better traction, the Civic Type R has larger tires than the Golf R (265/30R19 vs. 235/35R19).

The Civic Type R’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Golf R’s standard 35 series tires.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Civic Type R’s wheelbase is 4.2 inches longer than on the Golf R (107.7 inches vs. 103.5 inches).

The Civic Type R has a much larger trunk than the Golf R with its rear seat up (24.5 vs. 19.9 cubic feet).

If the windows are left open on the Civic Type R the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Golf R can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Civic Type R has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Golf R only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Civic Type R was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2018. The Golf R hasn’t been picked since 2015.

The Honda Civic outsold the Volkswagen Golf/GTI by over 17 to one during the 2022 model year.
