In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GR Corolla are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The GTI doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Toyota GR Corolla has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GTI doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The GR Corolla has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The GTI doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

Both the GR Corolla and the GTI have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the GR Corolla 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen covers the GTI. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the GTI ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GR Corolla’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the GTI’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 2 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GR Corolla’s warranty.

The battery on the GR Corolla is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the GR Corolla’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The GTI’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in initial quality. With 58 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is rated below average.

Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in long-term dependability. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Volkswagen is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in overall reliability. Volkswagen is ranked 24th.

The GR Corolla’s standard 1.6 turbo 3-cylinder produces 59 more horsepower (300 vs. 241) than the GTI’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The GR Corolla Morizo Edition’s standard 1.6 turbo 3-cylinder produces 59 more horsepower (300 vs. 241) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 273) than the GTI’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Toyota GR Corolla (base engine) is faster than the Volkswagen GTI (manual transmissions tested):

The GR Corolla has a tether attaching its gas cap to prevent its loss. The GTI’s gas cap isn’t tethered, so it can be left at a gas station if the driver forgets to screw the cap back in.

To facilitate fast shifting and allow the driver to focus on the road, the GR Corolla has a standard up-shift light to indicate when the engine is approaching redline. The GTI doesn’t offer an up-shift light.

The Toyota GR Corolla has a downshift rev synchronizer that automatically raises engine speed to make downshifts perfectly smooth. This keeps the car from lurching during downshifts, preventing loss of control during cornering. The GTI doesn’t offer a downshift rev synchronizer.

For better traction, the GR Corolla has larger standard tires than the GTI (235/40R18 vs. 225/40R18). The GR Corolla Morizo Edition’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GTI (245/40R18 vs. 235/35R19).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the GR Corolla is 2.2 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the GTI.

The GR Corolla’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (58.4% to 41.6%) than the GTI’s (60.9% to 39.1%). This gives the GR Corolla more stable handling and braking.

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition handles at .96 G’s, while the GTI Autobahn pulls only .92 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the GTI Autobahn (24.9 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 25.5 seconds @ .72 average G’s).

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the GR Corolla Circuit Edition is quieter than the GTI Autobahn (81 vs. 82 dB).

The GR Corolla has .8 inches more front legroom, .5 inches more front hip room and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the GTI.

The GR Corolla has a larger trunk with its rear seat folded than the GTI with its rear seat folded (35 vs. 34.5 cubic feet).

If the windows are left open on the GR Corolla the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the GTI can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.
