Compare the2023 Toyota Rav4VS 2023 Genesis GV70

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Rav4 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Genesis GV70 doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The Rav4 has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GV70 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Rav4 and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, and daytime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Rav4 the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2023, a rating granted to only 53 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The GV70 has not been fully tested, yet.

There are over 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Rav4’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Rav4’s reliability 12 points higher than the GV70.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota first in overall reliability. Genesis is ranked 12th.

On the EPA test cycle the Rav4 gets better mileage than the GV70:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Rav4 uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GV70 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Rav4 higher (6 out of 10) than the Genesis GV70 (5). This means the Rav4 produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the GV70 every 15,000 miles.

The Rav4 stops much shorter than the GV70:

The Rav4 Adventure handles at .84 G’s, while the GV70 Advanced pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Rav4 LE/XLE’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the GV70’s (36.1 feet vs. 37.7 feet). The Rav4 XLE Premium/Adventure/Limited/TRD Off-Road’s turning circle is .3 feet tighter than the GV70’s (37.4 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Rav4 LE/XLE has a 1.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the GV70 (8.4 vs. 7.3 inches), allowing the Rav4 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Rav4 XLE Premium/Limited/Adventure/TRD Off-Road’s minimum ground clearance is 1.3 inches higher than on the GV70 (8.6 vs. 7.3 inches).

The Toyota Rav4 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 800 to 900 pounds less than the Genesis GV70.

The Rav4 is 4.7 inches shorter than the GV70, making the Rav4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Rav4 Adventure/Limited/TRD Off-Road uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The GV70 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Rav4 Limited 4WD is quieter than the GV70 Sport Prestige (66 vs. 67 dB).

The Rav4 has .4 inches more rear headroom and .6 inches more rear legroom than the GV70.

The Rav4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the GV70 with its rear seat up (37.6 vs. 28.9 cubic feet). The Rav4 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GV70 with its rear seat folded (69.8 vs. 56.9 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Rav4 easier. The Rav4’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 27.8 inches, while the GV70’s liftover is 29.9 inches.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Rav4 uses the Vehicle Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV70 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Rav4 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left open on the Rav4 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Toyota service department.) The driver of the GV70 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Rav4 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The GV70 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
