Compare the2023 Infiniti Q50VS 2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

2023 Infiniti Q50
2023 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

Safety

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Q50 has standard Back-up Collision Intervention that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The 4 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Q50 has a standard Around View® Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 4 Series Gran Coupe only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Q50 and the 4 Series Gran Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available all wheel drive.

Warranty

The Q50 comes with a full 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The 4 Series Gran Coupe’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 10,000 miles sooner.

Infiniti’s powertrain warranty covers the Q50 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 4 Series Gran Coupe. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the 4 Series Gran Coupe ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Reliability

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Infiniti vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Infiniti 1 place higher in reliability than BMW.

Engine

The Q50’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 45 more horsepower (300 vs. 255) and 1 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 294) than the 430i Gran Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Q50 Red Sport 400’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 18 more horsepower (400 vs. 382) than the M440i Gran Coupe’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Q50 has 4.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the 4 Series Gran Coupe (20 vs. 15.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels

The Q50 Red Sport 400’s 265/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s optional 40 series tires.

The Q50 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 4 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the Q50 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. Run-flat tires aren’t available on some tire packages on the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Suspension and Handling

The Q50 Sport’s optional drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The 4 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better maneuverability, the Q50’s turning circle is 2.7 feet tighter than the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s (36.7 feet vs. 39.4 feet). The Q50 AWD’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.4 feet).

Chassis

The design of the Infiniti Q50 amounts to more than styling. The Q50 offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .26 to .29 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the 4 Series Gran Coupe (.28 to .3) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Q50 get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Q50 a Mid-size car, while the 4 Series Gran Coupe is rated a Compact.

The Q50 has 9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 4 Series Gran Coupe (100 vs. 91).

The Q50 has .9 inches more front headroom, 3 inches more front legroom, 1.5 inches more front shoulder room, .2 inches more rear headroom, .2 inches more rear legroom and 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Cargo Capacity

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the Q50 offers cargo security. The 4 Series Gran Coupe’s hatchback body style defeats cargo security.

Ergonomics

The Q50’s standard Entry/Exit Assist raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The 4 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Q50 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Infiniti Q50, based on reliability, safety and performance.
