For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Chevrolet Bolt doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Ioniq 5 and Bolt have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Ioniq 5 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Bolt’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Ioniq 5 Limited has standard Parking Collision Avoidance Assist that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Bolt doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Ioniq 5 has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Bolt doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard blind spot warning system which uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the Bolt’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Ioniq 5 has a standard rear cross-path warning system, which uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. Rear cross-path warning costs extra on the Bolt.

The Ioniq 5’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Bolt doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Bolt have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is safer than the Chevrolet Bolt:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Ioniq 5 its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 114 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Bolt is not even a standard “Top Safety Pick.”

Warranty

The Ioniq 5 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Bolt’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 5 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Chevrolet covers the Bolt. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Bolt ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Ioniq 5’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the Bolt’s (7/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Ioniq 5 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Bolt.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Ioniq 5’s reliability 16 points higher than the Bolt.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Hyundai third in reliability, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked 10th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 11 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

Engine

The Ioniq 5 Long Range’s optional electric motor produces 25 more horsepower (225 vs. 200) than the Bolt’s electric motor. The Ioniq 5’s optional electric motors produces 120 more horsepower (320 vs. 200) and 180 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 266) than the Bolt’s electric motor.

As tested in Car and Driver the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric motors is faster than the Chevrolet Bolt:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Ioniq 5 has larger standard tires than the Bolt (235/55R19 vs. 215/50R17). The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Bolt (255/45R20 vs. 215/50R17).

The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Bolt’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ioniq 5 has standard 19-inch wheels. Only 17-inch wheels are available on the Bolt. The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD has standard 20-inch wheels.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Chevrolet Bolt has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Ioniq 5 has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Ioniq 5 flat and controlled during cornering. The Bolt’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ioniq 5’s wheelbase is 15.7 inches longer than on the Bolt (118.1 inches vs. 102.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Ioniq 5 is 5.3 inches wider in the front and 5.7 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Bolt.

The Ioniq 5’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51% to 49%) than the Bolt’s (56.3% to 43.7%). This gives the Ioniq 5 more stable handling and braking.

The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the Bolt LT pulls only .78 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.1 seconds quicker than the Bolt (25.7 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 27.8 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Ioniq 5 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Bolt (6.1 vs. 5.4 inches), allowing the Ioniq 5 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The design of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 amounts to more than styling. The Ioniq 5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .288 Cd. That is lower than the Bolt (.31) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Ioniq 5 get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Ioniq 5 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Bolt doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Ioniq 5 Limited AWD is quieter than the Bolt LT (67 vs. 70 dB).

Passenger Space

The Ioniq 5 has 12.6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Bolt (106.5 vs. 93.9).

The Ioniq 5 has 2.6 inches more front hip room, 3 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom, 3.4 inches more rear legroom, 3 inches more rear hip room and 4.9 inches more rear shoulder room than the Bolt.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Ioniq 5’s rear seats recline. The Bolt’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Ioniq 5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Bolt with its rear seat up (27.2 vs. 16.6 cubic feet). The Ioniq 5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Bolt with its rear seat folded (59.3 vs. 57 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited’s power liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Ioniq 5’s power liftgate can also be opened or closed by pressing a button. The Bolt doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening liftgate.

Towing

The Ioniq 5 offers up to a 2300 lbs. towing capacity. The Bolt has no towing capacity.

Servicing Ease

The Ioniq 5 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Bolt uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

When two different drivers share the Ioniq 5 Limited, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Bolt doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Ioniq 5 Limited’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Bolt doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Ioniq 5 Limited has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Bolt doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited’s front power windows both open or close with one touch of the switches. The Bolt’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

On a hot day the Ioniq 5’s driver can lower the front windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Bolt can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Ioniq 5 Limited’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Bolt’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Ioniq 5’s headlights were rated “Good” to “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Bolt’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Ioniq 5 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Bolt doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Ioniq 5 Limited is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Bolt’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Ioniq 5 Limited keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Bolt doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Ioniq 5’s standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The Bolt doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Bolt offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Bolt doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The Ioniq 5 Limited’s Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Bolt doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Economic Advantages

The Ioniq 5 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Ioniq 5 will retain 43.25% to 43.48% of its original price after five years, while the Bolt only retains 37.26% to 37.29%.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Hyundai Ioniq 5, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Chevrolet Bolt isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Ioniq 5 second among compact suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Bolt isn’t in the top three in its category.

The Hyundai Ioniq outsold the Chevrolet Bolt by 21% during the 2022 model year.
