Compare the2023 Genesis GV60VS 2023 Volkswagen ID.4

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GV60 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Genesis GV60 has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The ID.4 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The GV60 has standard Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the GV60. But it costs extra on the ID.4.

Both the GV60 and the ID.4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The GV60 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The ID.4’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV60 2 years longer than Volkswagen covers the ID.4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the ID.4 ends after only 8 years or 100,000 miles.

The GV60’s 7 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the ID.4 runs out after 100,000 miles.

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV60 for 1 year and 16000 miles longer than Volkswagen pays for maintenance for the ID.4 (3/36,000 vs. 2/20,000).

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GV60’s reliability 18 points higher than the ID.4.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 74 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 30th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 62 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 21st.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 11 places higher in reliability than Volkswagen.

The GV60’s standard electric motors produces 113 more horsepower (314 vs. 201) and 217 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 229) than the ID.4’s standard electric motor. The GV60’s electric motors produces 19 more horsepower (314 vs. 295) and 107 lbs.-ft. more torque (446 vs. 339) than the ID.4’s optional electric motors. The GV60 Performance’s optional electric motors produces 188 more horsepower (483 vs. 295) and 177 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 339) than the ID.4’s optional electric motors.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Genesis GV60 (base engine) is faster than the Volkswagen ID.4 electric motors:

The Genesis GV60 has standard four-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power and improved directional control in poor weather. Only rear drums come on the ID.4. Drums can heat up and make stops longer, especially with antilock brakes that work much harder than conventional brakes.

The GV60 stops shorter than the ID.4:

For better traction, the GV60 has larger tires than the ID.4 (255/45R20 vs. 235/55R19).

The GV60 Advance’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the ID.4’s standard 55 series front and 50 series rear tires. The GV60 Performance’s tires have a lower 40 series profile than the ID.4 S’ 50 series front and 45 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV60 Advance has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the ID.4. The GV60 Performance’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels on the ID.4 S.

The GV60 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The ID.4’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The GV60 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The ID.4’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GV60’s wheelbase is 5.5 inches longer than on the ID.4 (114.2 inches vs. 108.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GV60 is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 2.9 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the ID.4.

The GV60 Performance handles at .85 G’s, while the ID.4 Pro pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GV60 Performance executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the ID.4 Pro (26.9 seconds @ .63 average G’s vs. 27.6 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

The GV60 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The ID.4 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The GV60 has 1.2 inches more front legroom and .2 inches more rear headroom than the ID.4.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the GV60’s rear seats recline. The ID.4’s rear seats don’t recline.

The GV60 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The ID.4 uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GV60 has standard extendable sun visors. The ID.4 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV60 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The ID.4 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The GV60’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The ID.4 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the GV60 keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The ID.4 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The GV60 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the ID.4 S/Pro S/Pro S Plus.

The GV60 has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the rear seat, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GV60’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The ID.4’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.
