For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Lexus GX have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Toyota Sequoia doesn’t offer pretensioners for its second-row seat belts.

The GX’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Sequoia doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the GX are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Sequoia doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The GX has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Sequoia doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Full-time four-wheel drive is standard on the GX. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Sequoia. Four-wheel drive of any type costs extra on the Sequoia.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the GX’s standard Downhill Assist Control allows you to creep down safely. The Sequoia doesn’t offer Downhill Assist Control.

The GX (except Base/Premium) offers an optional Panoramic View Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Sequoia only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the GX and the Sequoia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The GX comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Sequoia’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

Lexus’ powertrain warranty covers the GX 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Sequoia. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the Sequoia ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The GX’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Sequoia’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the GX’s reliability 25 points higher than the Sequoia.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the GX second among midsize premium suvs in their 2022 Initial Quality Study. The Sequoia isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus above average in initial quality. With 15 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated lower.

On the EPA test cycle the GX gets better mileage than the Sequoia:

Tires and Wheels

The GX’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Sequoia SR5’s standard 65 series tires.

The Lexus GX’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Toyota Sequoia only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

Suspension and Handling

The GX has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Sequoia doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The GX offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Sequoia’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The GX handles at .74 G’s, while the Sequoia 4x4 pulls only .71 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GX executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.5 seconds quicker than the Sequoia Limited 4x4 (28.3 seconds @ .58 average G’s vs. 29.8 seconds @ .55 average G’s).

Chassis

The Lexus GX may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 800 pounds less than the Toyota Sequoia.

The GX is 1 foot, 1 inches shorter than the Sequoia, making the GX easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The GX is 5.7 inches narrower than the Sequoia, making the GX easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the GX is quieter than the Sequoia 4x4 (43 vs. 45 dB).

Passenger Space

The GX has 3.2 inches more front headroom, 5.5 inches more rear headroom and .7 inches more third row headroom than the Sequoia.

Cargo Capacity

The GX has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Sequoia doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Payload

The GX has a higher standard payload capacity than the Sequoia (1295 vs. 1250 lbs.).

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Lexus service is better than Toyota. J.D. Power ranks Lexus first in service department satisfaction. With a 49% lower rating, Toyota is ranked 20th.

Ergonomics

The engine computer on the GX automatically engages the starter until the car starts with one twist of the key and disables the starter while the engine is running. The Sequoia’s starter can be accidentally engaged while the engine is running, making a grinding noise and possibly damaging the starter and ring gear.

The power windows standard on both the GX and the Sequoia have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the GX is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Sequoia prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

If the windows are left open on the GX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Sequoia can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

The GX’s power window, power lock and power mirror switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Sequoia’s power lock and power mirror switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The GX has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Sequoia doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The GX’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Sequoia’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Consumer Reports rated the GX’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the Sequoia’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the GX offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Sequoia doesn’t offer cornering lights.

When the GX is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Sequoia’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the GX keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Sequoia doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the GX’s optional (except Base) heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The Sequoia doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the GX is less expensive to operate than the Sequoia because typical repairs cost much less on the GX than the Sequoia, including $44 less for front brake pads, $170 less for a starter, $95 less for a fuel pump, $262 less for front struts and $103 less for a timing belt/chain.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Lexus GX and the Toyota Sequoia, based on reliability, safety and performance.

The Lexus GX outsold the Toyota Sequoia by almost four to one during the 2021 model year.
