The X5 xDrive45e’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Lyriq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The X5 xDrive45e has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the X5 xDrive45e. But it costs extra on the Lyriq.

The X5 xDrive45e’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the X5 xDrive45e and the Lyriq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the X5 xDrive45e the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2022, a rating granted to only 175 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Lyriq has not been tested, yet.

The X5 xDrive45e’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Lyriq’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X5 xDrive45e for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Lyriq.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW third in overall reliability. Cadillac is ranked 17th.

The X5 xDrive45e’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 49 more horsepower (389 vs. 340) and 118 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 325) than the Lyriq’s standard electric motor.

The X5 xDrive45e’s maximum EPA estimated range on a full tank and a full charge is 431 miles, after which it can be refueled at any gas station in minutes. The Lyriq’s range is only 312 miles, after which the minimum time to recharge is 10 minutes for only a 25% charge at a specially configured quick charge station not available in most areas. A full recharge at a professionally installed 220-volt charging station can take up to 6 hours and 30 minutes.

The X5 xDrive45e has a standard locking fuel door and a locking charge port with remote releases located convenient for the driver. The Lyriq doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

The X5 xDrive45e’s optional 315/35R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Lyriq’s optional 40 series tires.

The X5 xDrive45e offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Lyriq; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The front and rear suspension of the X5 xDrive45e uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Lyriq, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The X5 xDrive45e has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Lyriq’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The X5 xDrive45e has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The X5 xDrive45e’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For greater off-road capability the X5 xDrive45e has a 1.3 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Lyriq (8.3 vs. 7 inches), allowing the X5 xDrive45e to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The X5 xDrive45e offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Lyriq can only carry 5.

The X5 xDrive45e has 2.2 inches more front headroom, 1.1 inches more front shoulder room and 1 inch more rear headroom than the Lyriq.

The X5 xDrive45e has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Lyriq with its rear seat up (33.1 vs. 28 cubic feet). The X5 xDrive45e has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Lyriq with its rear seat folded (71.2 vs. 60.8 cubic feet).

The X5 xDrive45e’s cargo area is larger than the Lyriq’s in almost every dimension:

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the X5 xDrive45e. The Lyriq doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The X5 xDrive45e’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Lyriq’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The X5 xDrive45e’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Lyriq’s (5952 vs. 0 pounds).

A Condition-Based Service Display is standard on the X5 xDrive45e to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes and vehicle inspections based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Cadillac doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Lyriq.

The X5 xDrive45e offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the X5 xDrive45e the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Lyriq can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the X5 xDrive45e to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Lyriq doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the X5 xDrive45e has a standard rear wiper. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the X5 xDrive45e to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Lyriq doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

Both the X5 xDrive45e and the Lyriq have standard heated front seats. The X5 xDrive45e also offers optional heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Lyriq.

The BMW X5 outsold the Cadillac Lyriq by over 675 to one during 2022.
