Compare the2023 BMW iXVS 2023 Cadillac Lyriq

The iX’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Lyriq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The iX has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the iX. But it costs extra on the Lyriq.

The iX’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the iX and the Lyriq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The iX’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Lyriq’s (12 vs. 6 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the iX for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Lyriq.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW third in overall reliability. Cadillac is ranked 17th.

The iX xDrive50’s standard electric motors produces 176 more horsepower (516 vs. 340) and 239 lbs.-ft. more torque (564 vs. 325) than the Lyriq’s standard electric motor. The iX xDrive50’s electric motors produces 16 more horsepower (516 vs. 500) and 114 lbs.-ft. more torque (564 vs. 450) than the Lyriq’s optional electric motors. The iX M60’s standard electric motors produces 110 more horsepower (610 vs. 500) and 299 lbs.-ft. more torque (749 vs. 450) than the Lyriq’s optional electric motors.

As tested in Car and Driver the iX xDrive50 is faster than the Cadillac Lyriq electric motor:

The iX has a standard locking charge port with a remote release located convenient to the driver. The Lyriq doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

For better stopping power the iX’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Lyriq:

The iX offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Lyriq’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The iX has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The iX’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the iX is .1 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than on the Lyriq.

The iX xDrive50 handles at .88 G’s, while the Lyriq pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the iX has a 1.8 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Lyriq (8.8 vs. 7 inches), allowing the iX to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The iX has 2.9 inches more front headroom, 2.6 inches more front shoulder room and 1.8 inches more rear headroom than the Lyriq.

The front step up height for the iX is 1.8 inches lower than the Lyriq (17.4” vs. 19.2”). The iX’s rear step up height is 1.9 inches lower than the Lyriq’s (17.3” vs. 19.2”).

The iX has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Lyriq with its rear seat up (35.5 vs. 28 cubic feet). The iX has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Lyriq with its rear seat folded (77.9 vs. 60.8 cubic feet).

The iX’s cargo area is larger than the Lyriq’s in almost every dimension:

A Condition-Based Service Display is standard on the iX to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for vehicle inspections, vehicle inspection based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Cadillac doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Lyriq.

The iX offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the iX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Lyriq can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the iX has a standard rear wiper. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Laser headlights, optional on the iX, produce their light by firing blue lasers through phosphorus, a process that uses one-half the power of the Lyriq’s LED headlights. Laser headlights can have double the range of LEDs with a much smaller surface area.

Both the iX and the Lyriq have standard heated front seats. The iX also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Lyriq.

The BMW iX outsold the Cadillac Lyriq by over 46 to one during 2022.
