Compare the2023 Mazda CX-5 VS 2023 Genesis GV70

The CX-5 has standard Whiplash-Reducing Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash-Reducing Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The GV70 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the CX-5 and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

For its performance in IIHS driver-side and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, updated side impact, headlight, and daytime pedestrian crash prevention testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the CX-5 the rating of “Top Safety Pick” for 2023, a rating granted to only 53 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The GV70 has not been fully tested, yet.

There are over 77 percent more Mazda dealers than there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the CX-5’s warranty.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the CX-5’s reliability 20 points higher than the GV70.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2023 Auto Issue reports that Mazda vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Mazda fourth in overall reliability. Genesis is ranked 12th.

The CX-5’s optional 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 9 lbs.-ft. more torque (320 vs. 311) than the GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the CX-5 gets better mileage than the GV70:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the CX-5 (except Turbo)’s fuel efficiency. The GV70 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Mazda CX-5 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder engine for maximum performance). The GV70 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The CX-5 has engine speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The GV70 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better maneuverability, the CX-5’s turning circle is 1.7 feet tighter than the GV70’s (36 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

The Mazda CX-5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 700 pounds less than the Genesis GV70.

The CX-5 is 5.5 inches shorter than the GV70, making the CX-5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the CX-5 is quieter than the GV70 Sport Prestige (76 vs. 77 dB).

The CX-5 has .1 inches more front headroom and 2.4 inches more rear legroom than the GV70.

The CX-5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the GV70 with its rear seat up (30.8 vs. 28.9 cubic feet). The CX-5 has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GV70 with its rear seat folded (59.3 vs. 56.9 cubic feet).

The CX-5 offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Consumer Reports rated the CX-5’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the GV70’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the CX-5 Premium/Turbo has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The GV70 doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Insurance will cost less for the CX-5 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the CX-5 will cost $960 to $3390 less than the GV70 over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Mazda CX-5 will be $12875 to $14550 less than for the Genesis GV70.
