Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Electrified G80 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The S90 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Electrified G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The S90 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Electrified G80 has standard Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The S90 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the Electrified G80 and the S90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The Electrified G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The S90’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the Electrified G80 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the S90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the S90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Electrified G80 has a standard 850-amp battery. The S90’s 800-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 100 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 33rd, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 101 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 30th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 13 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

Engine

The Electrified G80’s electric motors produces 49 more horsepower (365 vs. 316) and 221 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 295) than the S90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid. The Electrified G80’s electric motors produces 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 472) than the S90 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Genesis Electrified G80 is faster than the S90 B6 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Electrified G80 can travel with zero emissions on a full charge for 282 miles. The S90 T8 has to start its internal combustion engine after only 21 miles.

The Electrified G80 2.5T’s standard fuel tank has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (17.2 vs. 15.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Electrified G80 3.5T’s standard fuel tank has 3.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the S90 (19.3 vs. 15.9 gallons).

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Genesis Electrified G80 higher (10 out of 10) than the Volvo S90 (7). This means the Electrified G80 produces up to 11.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the S90 every 15,000 miles.

The Electrified G80’s 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S90’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Electrified G80 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the S90.

Suspension and Handling

The Electrified G80 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The S90’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the Electrified G80 uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

Chassis

The Electrified G80 is 3.1 inches shorter than the S90, making the Electrified G80 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Genesis Electrified G80 amounts to more than styling. The Electrified G80 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .26 Cd. That is lower than the S90 (.28 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Electrified G80 get better fuel mileage.

The Electrified G80 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The S90 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Electrified G80 has standard extendable sun visors. The S90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Electrified G80 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the S90.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Genesis Electrified G80 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the S90 T6 offers wireless charging.

The Electrified G80’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The S90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
