Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Electrified G80 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Electrified G80 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Model 3 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The Electrified G80 has standard Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Front Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Electrified G80. But it costs extra on the Model 3.

The Electrified G80 has a standard Surround View Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Model 3 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Electrified G80’s standard rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

The Electrified G80’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The Electrified G80 has standard Connected Care, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Electrified G80 and the Model 3 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rearview cameras.

The Genesis Electrified G80 weighs 973 to 1158 pounds more than the Tesla Model 3. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

The Electrified G80 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Model 3’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the Electrified G80 2 years longer than Tesla covers the Model 3. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Model 3 ends after only 8 years or 100,000 miles.

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the Electrified G80 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Tesla doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Model 3.

There are over 2 times as many Genesis dealers as there are Tesla dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Electrified G80’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Tesla vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 70 more problems per 100 vehicles, Tesla is ranked 28th, below the industry average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Genesis vehicles are more reliable than Tesla vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Genesis 20 places higher in reliability than Tesla.

Engine

The Electrified G80’s electric motors produces 94 more horsepower (365 vs. 271) and 206 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 310) than the Model 3 Rear Wheel Drive’s standard electric motor. The Electrified G80’s electric motors produces 141 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 375) than the Model 3 Long Range’s standard electric motors. The Electrified G80’s electric motors produces 29 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 487) than the Model 3 Performance’s standard electric motors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Electrified G80 has larger tires than the Model 3 (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 235/45R18).

The Electrified G80’s 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Model 3’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Electrified G80 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Model 3.

Suspension and Handling

The Electrified G80 has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Model 3’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Electrified G80’s wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than on the Model 3 (118.5 inches vs. 113.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Electrified G80 is 2 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the Model 3.

The Electrified G80 handles at .90 G’s, while the Model 3 pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

Chassis

The Electrified G80 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Model 3 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Electrified G80 has 2 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear legroom and 3.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Model 3.

Cargo Capacity

With its sedan body style and remote trunk release lockout, the Electrified G80 offers cargo security. The Model 3’s non-lockable folding seat defeats cargo security.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Electrified G80’s power trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Electrified G80’s power trunk can also be opened or closed by pressing a button. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Ergonomics

The Electrified G80 has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Electrified G80’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The Model 3 doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Electrified G80 has standard extendable sun visors. The Model 3 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the Electrified G80 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Model 3 doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Electrified G80 keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Model 3 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Electrified G80 has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Model 3.
