Compare the2023 Nissan Z VS 2022 MINI Cooper Hardtop 2 Door

The Z’s blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Z’s standard rear cross-path warning system uses sensors in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Z and the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and driver alert monitors.

The Nissan Z weighs 594 to 890 pounds more than the MINI Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts. Crosswinds also affect lighter cars more.

Nissan’s powertrain warranty covers the Z 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than MINI covers the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 10 times as many Nissan dealers as there are MINI dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Z’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than MINI vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan above average in initial quality. With 1 more problems per 100 vehicles, MINI is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than MINI vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 10 places higher in reliability than MINI.

The Z’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 266 more horsepower (400 vs. 134) and 188 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 162) than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s standard 1.5 turbo 3-cylinder. The Z’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 211 more horsepower (400 vs. 189) and 144 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 206) than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door S’ standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Z’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 172 more horsepower (400 vs. 228) and 115 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 235) than the John Cooper Works Hardtop’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Nissan Z is faster than the MINI Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (manual transmissions tested):

The Z has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (16.4 vs. 11.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

A nine-speed automatic is no cost option on the Nissan Z, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

For better stopping power the Z’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door:

The Z’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Z has larger standard tires than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (245/45R18 vs. 175/65R15). The Z Performance Coupe’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (F:255/40R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. 205/40R18).

The Z Sport Coupe’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s standard 65 series tires. The Z Performance Coupe’s 275/35R19 rear tires have a lower 35 series profile than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Z Sport Coupe has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 15-inch wheels are standard on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. The Z Performance Coupe’s 19-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels optional on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

The Z has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Z’s wheelbase is 2.2 inches longer than on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (100.4 inches vs. 98.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Z is 2.6 inches wider in the front and 3.9 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

The Z’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (56.4% to 43.6%) than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s (62.3% to 35.1%). This gives the Z more stable handling and braking.

The Z Performance Coupe handles at .93 G’s, while the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door S pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Z Performance Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (25.3 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 26.9 seconds @ .66 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Z’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s (32.8 feet vs. 35.4 feet).

The Z Performance uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

The Z has 1.5 inches more front legroom, 1.2 inches more front hip room and 3.6 inches more front shoulder room than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Z. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Z Manual can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Z can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door can’t be towed flat on the ground.

The engine in the Z is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Z’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works does not have a temperature gauge.

The Z’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. MINI does not offer a locking feature on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s standard power windows.
