Compare the2023 BMW X6 MVS 2022 Maserati Levante

2023 BMW X6 M
2022 Maserati Levante

Safety

The X6 M’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Levante doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW X6 M has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Levante doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The X6 M has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Levante doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The X6 M has standard Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Levante doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The X6 M’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Levante.

The X6 M’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Levante doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the X6 M and the Levante have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The X6 M’s corrosion warranty is 8 years and unlimited miles longer than the Levante’s (12/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the X6 M for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Maserati doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Levante.

There are over 3 times as many BMW dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X6 M’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Maserati vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW above average in initial quality. With 90 more problems per 100 vehicles, Maserati is rated below average.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the X6 M’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Levante doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW X6 M higher (3 out of 10) than the Maserati Levante (1 to 3). This means the X6 M produces up to 22.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Levante every 15,000 miles.

The EPA certifies the BMW X6 M as an “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV). The Maserati Levante is only certified to “Low Emissions Vehicle” (LEV) standards.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the X6 M’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Levante:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the X6 M has larger tires than the Levante (F:295/35R21 & R:315/35R21 vs. 265/45R20). The X6 M’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Levante (F:295/35R21 & R:315/35R21 vs. F:265/45R20 & R:295/40R20).

The X6 M’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Levante’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the X6 M has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the Levante Modena S.

Suspension and Handling

The X6 M has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Levante doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The X6 M offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Maserati doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Levante.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the X6 M is 2.8 inches wider in the front and .1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Levante.

Passenger Space

The X6 M has 4.2 inches more front shoulder room, 1.1 inches more rear legroom and 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the Levante.

Cargo Capacity

The X6 M has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Levante with its rear seat up (27.4 vs. 20.5 cubic feet). The X6 M has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Levante with its rear seat folded (59.6 vs. 57.3 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the X6 M’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Levante doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Levante, the X6 M has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The X6 M has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Levante doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the X6 M to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the Levante.

The X6 M offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Levante.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the BMW X6 M has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The Levante doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The X6 M’s Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Levante doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its November 2020 issue and they ranked the BMW X6 M Competition three places higher than the Maserati Levante Trofeo.

The BMW X6 outsold the Maserati Levante by almost three to one during the 2021 model year.
