An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Yukon XL V8’s fuel efficiency. The Wagoneer L doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the GMC Yukon XL uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended on Yukon XL Denali for maximum performance). The Grand Wagoneer L requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the GMC Yukon XL, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Wagoneer L.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Yukon XL’s wheelbase is 4.1 inches longer than on the Wagoneer L (134.1 inches vs. 130 inches).

The GMC Yukon XL may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 600 pounds less than the Jeep Wagoneer L.
