In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Camry are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The A4 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Camry XLE/XSE offers an optional Rear Cross Traffic Braking that use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The A4 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the Camry and the A4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Toyota Camry is safer than the Audi A4:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Toyota Camry is safer than the Audi A4:

For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention system, its standard vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention system, and its standard headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Camry its highest rating: “Top Safety Pick Plus” for 2022, a rating granted to only 87 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The A4 is only a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2022.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Camry 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the A4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the A4 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Camry for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the A4.

There are over 4 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Camry’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Camry has a standard 600-amp battery. The A4’s 420-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in initial quality. With 67 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is rated below average.

J.D. Power ranks Toyota above average in long-term dependability. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Audi is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in overall reliability. Audi is ranked 14th.

The Camry’s optional 3.5 DOHC V6 produces 40 more horsepower (301 vs. 261) than the A4 45 TFSI’s optional 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

On the EPA test cycle the Camry gets better mileage than the A4:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Camry uses regular unleaded gasoline. The A4 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Toyota Camry, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the A4.

The Camry stops shorter than the A4:

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Camry is .4 inches wider in the front and 1.7 inches wider in the rear than the track on the A4.

The Camry TRD handles at .94 G’s, while the A4 Prestige pulls only .90 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Camry XSE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the A4 Premium (26.7 seconds @ .66 average G’s vs. 27.2 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Camry LE’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the A4’s (37.4 feet vs. 38.1 feet).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Camry a Mid-size car, while the A4 is rated a Compact.

The Camry has 8.4 cubic feet more passenger volume than the A4 (100.4 vs. 92).

The Camry has 1 inch more front headroom, .8 inches more front legroom, 1.8 inches more front shoulder room, .6 inches more rear headroom, 2.3 inches more rear legroom and 1.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the A4.

The Camry has a much larger trunk than the A4 (15.1 vs. 12 cubic feet).

The Camry offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The A4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Consumer Reports rated the Camry’s headlight performance “Fair,” a higher rating than the A4’s headlights, which were rated “Poor.”

The Camry is available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The A4 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Camry is less expensive to operate than the A4 because it costs $109 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Camry than the A4, including $262 less for a water pump, $291 less for a muffler, $38 less for front brake pads, $283 less for a starter, $118 less for a fuel pump and $498 less for front struts.
