Compare the2022 Mercedes G-ClassVS 2021 Lexus LX 570

The G-Class’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The LX 570 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the G-Class and the LX 570 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

There are over 57 percent more Mercedes dealers than there are Lexus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the G-Class’ warranty.

The G 550’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 33 more horsepower (416 vs. 383) and 47 lbs.-ft. more torque (450 vs. 403) than the LX 570’s 5.7 DOHC V8. The AMG G 63’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 194 more horsepower (577 vs. 383) and 224 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 403) than the LX 570’s 5.7 DOHC V8.

On the EPA test cycle the G-Class gets better mileage than the LX 570:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the G-Class’ fuel efficiency. The LX 570 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the G-Class’ engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The LX 570 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The G-Class has 1.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the LX 570 (26.4 vs. 24.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes G-Class, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the LX 570.

For better stopping power the AMG G 63’s brake rotors are larger than those on the LX 570:

For better traction, the G-Class’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the LX 570 (295/40R22 vs. 285/50R20).

The G-Class’ optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the LX 570’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G-Class offers optional 22-inch wheels. The LX 570’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G-Class’ wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than on the LX 570 (113.8 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

The AMG G 63 handles at .75 G’s, while the LX 570 pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the G-Class has a greater minimum ground clearance than the LX 570 (9.5 vs. 8.9 inches), allowing the G-Class to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Mercedes G-Class may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 150 to 250 pounds less than the Lexus LX 570.

The G 550 is 10.3 inches shorter than the LX 570, making the G-Class easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The G-Class has a much larger cargo volume than the LX 570 with its rear seat up (38.1 vs. 16.3 cubic feet).

The power windows standard on both the G-Class and the LX 570 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the G-Class is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The LX 570 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the G-Class has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The LX 570 doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The G-Class’ power mirror controls are mounted on the door for easy access. The LX 570’s power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

The G-Class offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the LX 570.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes G-Class has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the LX 570 Three-Row offers wireless charging and it costs extra.

The G-Class’ Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The LX 570 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Motor Trend performed a comparison test in its February 2019 issue and they ranked the Mercedes G 550 higher than the Lexus LX 570.

The G-Class was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2019. The LX 570 hasn’t been picked since 1999.

The Mercedes G-Class outsold the Lexus LX 570 by almost two to one during the 2021 model year.
