Compare the2023 Mitsubishi Eclipse CrossVS 2022 Jeep Compass

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Eclipse Cross. But it costs extra on the Compass.

Both the Eclipse Cross and the Compass have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is safer than the Jeep Compass:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is safer than the Jeep Compass:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Eclipse Cross, with its four-star roll-over rating, is 1.7% to 2.1% less likely to roll over than the Compass, which received a three-star rating.

The Eclipse Cross comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Compass’ 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Eclipse Cross 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Jeep covers the Compass. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Compass ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Eclipse Cross’ corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Compass’ (7 vs. 5 years).

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Eclipse Cross’ reliability 19 points higher than the Compass.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi above average in long-term dependability. With 9 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Jeep is rated below average.

The Eclipse Cross’ 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 12 lbs.-ft. more torque (184 vs. 172) than the Compass’ 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is faster than the Jeep Compass:

On the EPA test cycle the Eclipse Cross ES gets better fuel mileage than the Compass 4x4 (25 city/28 hwy vs. 22 city/30 hwy).

The Eclipse Cross has 2.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Compass (15.8 vs. 13.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Eclipse Cross has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Compass doesn’t offer a CVT.

The Eclipse Cross stops much shorter than the Compass:

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Eclipse Cross’ wheelbase is 1.3 inches longer than on the Compass (105.1 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

The Eclipse Cross SEL handles at .74 G’s, while the Compass Trailhawk pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Eclipse Cross SEL executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Compass Trailhawk (29 seconds @ .56 average G’s vs. 29.6 seconds @ .53 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Eclipse Cross AWD’s turning circle is .5 feet tighter than the Compass Trailhawk’s (34.8 feet vs. 35.3 feet). The Eclipse Cross AWD’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the Compass’ (34.8 feet vs. 36.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Eclipse Cross has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Compass (8.5 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Eclipse Cross to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Eclipse Cross has .3 inches more front headroom and 2.8 inches more rear hip room than the Compass.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Eclipse Cross’ rear seats recline. The Compass’ rear seats don’t recline.

The Eclipse Cross’ standard towing capacity is much higher than the Compass’ (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

The Eclipse Cross SEL offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Compass doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Eclipse Cross SEL’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Compass’ rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

The Eclipse Cross has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank. The Compass doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Eclipse Cross’ available headlights were rated “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Compass’ headlights are rated “Marginal” to “Poor.”

The Eclipse Cross’ standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Compass Sport doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.
